The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Does anybody else wish that our Shiros came in a better box than what we get?
Nah, I'm fine with 'em. Actually I kinda like 'em--they're the iconic, simple Shirogorov boxes. I always got a kick out of the squiggly little paper accordion spacers too. 😊

I don't keep the knives in their boxes anyway, though a few makers' boxes are stored more carefully in the bottom of my large knife cabinet--Shiro, CRK, and Cheburkov. The rest are in shoe boxes in the loft. The Shiro boxes are also appreciated as they take up almost no room, though I gotta say the Cheburkov boxes are quite nice and their newer ones are very sweet. Chris Reeve packaging has evolved a lot over the years and is well done, but it's almost too much and takes up a lotta space. I vote for keeping the skinny little matte black Bear cages.

I feel like the little flaps at the end of the boxes are going to fall off after opening and closing them enough times. I do store almost all of my knives in the boxes - other times we complain that some Buck Knives boxes are way too big (Buck 110/112) and some are more compact (Vantage or Paradigm Shift), but either ones are nicer than the Shiro box that's a step above paper but a step below cardboard.

(EDIT - like CWiliiams said, not saying need bigger, just need better quality).

I like the smaller size that’s just big enough for the knife and COA to fit in compared to a lot of other boxes I have. I think something like the CRK box would be nice as well but I find those much larger than they need to be at the same time.

I'd been ogling Shirogorov knives for some time and had been PMing about them with a few members here, soliciting opinions and guidance before taking the plunge early this past summer. One who was particularly cordial and helpful offered me the knife pictured below and it became my first Shiro. The second followed closely on that one's heels and a third showed up at my PO just earlier this week. Needless to say, I totally love these knives and there's lots to say about them, but all I'll mention for now is they share the seemingly contradictory qualities of being both over-priced and completely worth it.

Anyway, I've searched back a ways and haven't found a Show Us Your Shiros thread, so please do just that as well as sharing your thoughts and comments on these fantastic knives.

Edit: It's a wonder this thread ever got off the ground with that crappy picture I had up here to start. Let's try this one of the Python slithering through some fungi....

...Yeah, that's better.
That would convince me to pull the trigger too there’s not one thing that isn’t aesthetically appealing about it .

I’m pretty sure Doc is saying better quality boxes/more durable, not bigger boxes.

The size is nice and perfect, the quality of the box is thin and frail. I feel like I’m going to rip the tab while opening, even when being careful.

I don’t store mine in the boxes however.

Personally I consider the appeal and quality of current CRK packaging (+ supplemental stuff) exemplary for higher-end production knives (but half the size would be better).

From my experience it tends to provoke comments like "you definitely get what you paid for" from folks, even from those who are not dedicated knife collectors and know nothing about Chris Reeve or his manufacturing.

Shiro packaging is neither sturdy/convenient, nor attractive/impressive. It feels like something to be thrown away immediately 🙃 and the only reason to keep it is to avoid drop of re-sale value in case I decide to trade the particular knife.

Shiro might decide to improve the quality of the boxes at some point, most likely to sweeten the pill of another price increase. :)

I forgot which model it was but I remember receiving one that was too small for the COA to actually fit into - it was combined with the box in a ziploc.

My Neon NL was like that, the COA was rubber banded to the box lol.
Have the usual boxes changed some? My Quantum Ursus NL came in a dark brown, not the usual black, box, though the color might be related to the Ursus line. The major difference, though, was in the proportions--deeper--and that the packaging included a slide-out tray like my F95R, unlike my other, older knives. The QUNL also came with a white, horizontal COA, not unlike that which came with my Russian-sourced F95R. It's always been my impression that the black vertical COAs one gets with knives from R1are filled out here and, if the blanks are unchanged, they wouldn't fit in the interior trays and could end up rubber banded to the box. A bit cheesy for such expensive pieces? Yeah, probably, but really incidental to the quality of the knives IMO.

Get ready for F3 Outdoor TODAY!

Similar to 111 Outdoor -- with a leather pouch instead of pocket clip, but sadly Cromax PM, not Vanax 37.

On the makers side they were gone in 7 minutes.

I expect MSRP $700.

A few pictures from the official announcement:

That’s pretty sweet! I’ve never seen the “outdoor” model. My Russian is not so good… is there a release date we could expect for US dealer?

I believe F3 Outdoor is supposed to be offered by the only official US dealer TODAY.

The first Outdoor project (60 knives) was announced at the end of 2020, made for 27th Arsenal Show in Moscow, but some of the pieces were sold through the maker's own site:
