The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

:)

ChazzyP ChazzyP , “Medved” sounds a little brutal and usually refers to a grown animal.

While the logo definitely reflects a grown bear, some Shiro fans use the appropriate diminutive “Mishka” — it corresponds to “Bruin”. 😃
As I own a number of knives by Aleksandr Cheburkov, I'm familiar with his "Bear" model which I've always seen as a translation of "Medved" or "МЕДВЕДЬ" from his website. BTW, that's one I don't have. I'll try not to be so brutal going forward as I've come to appreciate some of the subtleties of your language from corresponding with a few of my Russian friends. ;)

A carbon fiber that is slightly similar by Forum Forge is called Brimstone Carbon Fiber. Cool name.

Here is my new Hati Gen 3 with Red Technocarbon. If I fail to acquire and Ignis when they come out later, maybe this might serve as a suitable stand in until I do get one later? I am really digging this one.

Killer! Very nice Shirogorov collection you’ve amassed there!

I only have one Shorogorov…an F3NS black cf, which I love. And still on the lookout for a Stellar First Production.

I didn’t mean YOU are brutal. I meant Shiro knives are fine and elegant, unlike the full grown brutal animal :)

Hope you are kidding, I just casually mentioned “Mishka”. Whatever term suits you, absolutely no restrictions 🙃

BTW, my guess is Cheburkov was deadly serious when naming the mentioned model... He could have named it Grizzly if it was common for Russian ear.

See if you can find and join that facebook Shirogorov buy sell trade group.

All good, my friend--just kidding for sure. I expect Alex was indeed deadly serious in naming that model as it certainly is a beast of a knife.

Over the years of this thread's existence we've referred to those participating here as both Denizens, as a bit of a play on words, as well as a Sleuth collectively, as that's the actual term for a group of bears. Mishka has kind of a nice ring to it for a Shiro enthusiast. Мишка is that correct? As a diminutive that might mean "baby bear", or also might be a unisex name, nickname, or term of affection?

ChazzyP ChazzyP , that's a relief. :)

May I ask which of his knives you would prefer as an EDC if you had to choose from those you already own?

The thread name itself is pretty cool, any further development (like the play on words you mentioned) is even cooler. A kind of lore, I guess? 🙃

Yes, Мишка is correct. It may correspond to "baby bear", but it is also the first name of a full grown bear from the Russian folklore. The full name is "Мишка Косолапый" (In-toed).

And there's a rather common Russian name Михаил, which has a short form Миша appropriate between colleagues and friends. The short form Мишка is rather unceremonious -- acceptable between close friends or when a senior citizen addresses to a younger one.

When a baby girl Маша calls a full grown bear Мишка, it sounds funny, she considers herself to be the person in charge and acts accordingly -- https://www.youtube.com/@MashaBearRUSSIAN

B Bacchus , we also have The Cheburkov Channel here for Aleksandr's knives which I started just about four years ago. The Den will be at seven years this fall and is about ten times the size in posts/pages as The Channel, Shiro's apparently being way more popular or at least more well known. (I was amazed when looking for those stats that we've had over a half-million views at this thread.).

I've looked to keep the discussions of each maker's knives to their separate threads as each have their own design aesthetic (within what might be broadly described as a certain "Russian style", though I know that's perhaps too broad a characterization) and are of impeccable quality, each featuring their own evolutions and innovations. I'd hate to see lot of argument about which is "better", or even worse, "worse". I enjoy both greatly.

Anyway, as you asked, I'd be hard pressed to pick just one of my six Chebs, though I could start by narrowing it down to three, maybe. The knife in The Channel's OP, the red CTek Voron, is both a beauty and somewhat special to me as it was made to order for its blade finish, corresponding with
Aleksandr with Marina translating after an introduction through Vlad P. It is a little long and pointy for usual EDC perhaps. My newest Leader Lightweight has the same very cool CF linerless linerlock construction as my small Strizh, is incredibly light, especially since removing the backspacer, and has an excellent blade profile. I'm carrying that one today. I guess, for EDC, I'd have to pick my Pyramid-milled Scout, my first Cheburkov and one that's quite like my F95 Turtle, my most-carried Shiro, in size, heft, and action. The Scout has just the right size for me, a gorgeously milled blade, and has gradually developed the most wear of all my Chebs.

OK, there's a whole three paragraphs of me violating my own posting maxim for the two threads. Oh well.... 🤷‍♂️

This is such a fantastic, albeit dangerous, thread. Can I ask what the name of the fourth Elemental series will be? Plus, how did you all know that “Ignis” is the name of the third one? Just curious. Thanks all!

After Ignis, maybe the last one will be Aeroflot 🤣 But more likely Ventus?

Just speculation (or more like educated guess?), AFAIK the workshop has never revealed the details of the project.

Theoretically it should consist of either 4 or 5 elements... depending on the stock of exotic carbon variations 🙃

Anyway, I'm going to give this fine knife a chance to prove himself as an EDC. The worst case scenario is I end up paying extra for a surgery procedure 🙃 -- removing the inlay, restonewashing the scale and reinstalling the inlay back.
Just noticed how lucky I am -- the new Hati blade is as close to having a sharpening choil as I could expect from a Shiro knife (at least from a production piece, not CD or full custom):

Hati-Gen3-choil.jpg

And some very basic food prep -- acceptable performance, but less convenient than established by extra-thin 111 blade (2.8mm):

I love the new f3 outdoor but am kinda bummed I blew my budget, I would’ve picked up the red carbon Hati Gen. 3 instead.

I’m newer to Shiro but have handled or owned F95s, neons, quantum’s, f3s and Hati Gen. 3.

Hati gen3 is my favorite of the bunch and would’ve totally got the red for backup

Slightly more choil than mine I think...

Buy the Hati Gen 3 Red Technocarbon NOW, and sell the F3 outdoor ASAP after you snag one of these! You could sell it for a $25-$50 loss fast enough to put the money towards the credit card you use for the Hati Gen 3... Maybe Recon1 will take it back for a small restocking fee?
