That's why I keep a roll of masking tape with my Wicked edge. Curious as to why you had to sharpen a brand new Shiro? I have quite a few that are years old and still cut like a scalpel with the factory edge.
I always use masking tape on the spines, but this is the first knife I've owned that didn't jive with the angles when it's all set up. Once I nicked it...that was that. Done is done.
To be fair, I wondered if this would be an issue when I ordered the knife. The clamp had to sit nearly all the way to the pivot to catch the flats.
I sharpened the Stellar because was truly the dullest NIB knife I've ever purchased. It wouldn't pull a hair from my arm. Dull knives bother me more than sharpening marks.

Not a problem though. The knife is awesome and it will be carried and used to cut whatever needs cutting. These will be the first scratches of many.
