The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

I'm not spending money every month for a chance to spend more money!
Seems more and more retailers are jumping on this subscription thing as a quick money making scheme with no cost to them!
Agreed. I understand buying a pass to a physical knife show, since they have expenses to hold such a show and you are getting the opportunity to meet a bunch of cool people and see lots of cool stuff. But a pass to a virtual knife show solely for the purposes of lotteries (that would normally be free to enter) and apparently listening to some Youtubers give a presentation (?) is a bridge too far.

No. You pay $100 to be entered into the lotteries for this month. Winning the lottery gives you the opportunity to buy the knife at the table price listed in the announcement - for the Quantum, table price is $1950. On top of the $100 show/event ticket.
Even if I was in the market for a $2000 knife right now it's just a little off putting to pay 100 for a chance to buy a knife they made 50 of. Then if I win the opportunity to purchase the knife while I'm at work or away from the computer and can't pay within 2 hours the chance to purchase the knife and my $100 is gone.

On top of that R1 will charge you shipping, plus on their expensive knives they charge you fees on top of the sale price and shipping unless you use PPFF… pretty shady business practices imo. I really wish there was more Shiro dealers in the US. Monopolies are bad for the consumer and R1 rakes us through the coals since they are the only game in town

I recently purchased a Shiro Quantum Gen 2 here on the forum. This week I realized that it had some vertical blade play -- and worse, that the knife when spine tapped can actually induce lock failure.

Person I bought from (on the exchange) purchased new from Recon1 in June of last year. I have reached out to Recon1 both through email and voicemail and have received no response after 4 days.

I did reach out to Tom from Shirogorov (email) and he responded immediately. Apparently, I can turn the knife over to Shiro at CCKS (here in LA in February luckily). If I go through Recon1, they will also hand the knife to Shiro at CCKS but I will have to fill out warranty paperwork. Unfortunately, if Shiro deems the knife repair is not covered under warranty OR if I want other services performed on the knife that aren't covered under warranty, I would not be able to do that directly with Shiro - only possible through Recon1 due to sanctions and international payments.

Overall, think I made a bit of a mistake picking up a Shiro and now seem to be at the beginning of a really long warranty process (~6 months). Frustrated

Have a Koenig Arius arriving tomorrow though so hopefully that will tide me over until this is resolved.

Curious if anyone has come across vertical blade play that can't be adjusted out by the pivot or lock failure when spine tapping. Feel free to shoot me a PM, I can share videos.

That's a bummer sir. I gotta say that every-other second-hand knife I've purchased had something wonky with it. So much so, that I simply will not purchase a second-hand folder anymore. If I can't buy a folder NIB from an authorized dealer, then I won't wind up owning one.

It's just too much money for me to risk on nothing more than the word of someone I haven't met. :(

Let us know how this shakes our for you.

Not to say Shiro isn't at fault but..
Why aren't you mad at the person you bought it from? Was the problem listed in the description?
You don't know how it was treated after it left the factory. I would want my money back! Let them go thru the repair hassle as they are original purchaser.
Why would you spine wack a folding knife? There not designed for that. Made up internet hype to get web clicks.
There is only one person at Recon doing Shiro repair forms. It takes her a while to return messages. Especially if she's out of work for any reason. {Dumb on Recon's for this}

I had the knife for over a week before I realized that there was anything wrong with it . I had carried it and there are now minor scratches on the blade . Didn’t feel like it was 100% fair to demand a refund . Seller has been in touch and willing to help , he shared original purchase receipt from recon1 with me.

Honestly when I first received the knife I was concerned about the light lock up but lots of threads seemed to say this was normal . It didn’t develop vertical play until later when I started manipulating the blade and handle with 2 hands ,

The spine taps were light and were done on a towel with the knife open and locked because I no longer trusted the knife . Was surprised the lock failed at which point I decided I needed warranty help and would not carry it . Before that I thought the lock was solid and it was just a bit of play .

Pic for attention. Overall I love the fit and finish and the details so still want to keep the knife long term , just disappointed in my particular example

I’d say that is the biggest drawback to Shiro. Although it’s rare, if you do need warranty work it’s a long process and you have to deal with R1 who gives it to Shiro.

I’ve had 10 Shiros, 2 second hand, and have never experienced anything but perfection.

I may keep an eye out for another Shiro on the exchange if this goes back to Russia . Have a Koenig arius arriving today to hopefully tide me over .

What is your favorite production Shiro model ? I liked the quantum gen 2 but for my next one want to move away from the Persian belly sweep blade shape .

Should I stick with MRBS and frame lock or are the SRBS and liner locks just as good ?

not interested in the smaller sizes

Hati gen 3 is my favorite and easy to find new or used. The Stellar is also awesome and has a unique liner lock and all titanium with MRBS. F95 is great too. Can’t go wrong 😎

I’d say stick with MRBS

Cool. The Hati G3 purportedly weighs ~4 ounces (which is sorta my upper limit for real EDC).

I really wanted an F3 with crazy colored G10, or maybe micarta. Unfortunately they just aren't available now. Will find one eventually.

Here’s the weight of a Hati Gen 3 Sub 4 oz. Next to my F3 NS for weight comparison

I am by far no Shiro expert, but don’t really see much difference between the drop shutty of a SRBS vs a MRBS. I had a Quantum and although it was nice and comfortable (minus the small pointy flipper tab that hurts like heck when you “stub” your finger on it), it was enough for me to sell mine. I have a tendency to squeeze the frame, making it even harder to open.

I really like the F3 models as far as being the most comfortable overall, and seems it’s what I reach for most. The Hati Gen 3 is nice, and light, and slim but like my F3 NS much better. The F3’s come with the extra weight though, but the higher ends with the MRBS have internal frame cuts for weight reduction like my NS. FWIW, my Shiro’s have all been 2nd hand so far.

Pictures deleted to make space for new ones

Good stuff. My Hati G3 is 4.2 oz.. Must be due to the lanyard. I haven't been a lanyard guy, but promised myself that I'd give it at least a month with the new Hati before removing it. I have to admit that it's much easier to get out of the pocket with the lanyard, and incidentally, the Hati is easier to get in and out of my pocket than the Stellar. The pocket clips are different animals (but both good).

My production Stellar is 4.3 oz. with no lanyard.

Thanks for the heads up about the F3 weight. I plan to use an F3 for my camping knife when they become available again. You know...making feather sticks, whittling, cooking, etc.. The idea of a fatter grip sounds good. Since the Stellar, I'm liking the idea of liner-locks more every day.

Up to now I've always taken my CRK large Annual camping. Time for something new. I'll need a 111 as well. and a Hation Zero in CF at some point too.

I meant to post this up yesterday but was busy. Didn’t realize that was your red Hati when I posted 😂, guess you already had the weight 😃. You’ll love the comfort of the F3 with those chores vs the CRK for sure. Very comfortable model. I need a 111 as well 🤞

If you do want/need to remove the lanyard, try to untie the knot and not cut it off. Save them for a possible future sale someday (like if you need to make a down-payment on a car, house, or wedding, but nothing else is a valid reason 😆)

Gents, what is a Stellaris? Is it a Stellar with composite scales on both sides?

My understanding is that a Stellaris is only available in CD or custom flavors. Is that right?

If anyone has seen or owned one...what does a Stellaris weigh?

Yes - Stellaris is carbon/composite scales. Currently only available in CD/Customs but I'd say there is approx 0% chance that it doesn't get the F3 treatment and end up with some serial production variants eventually. They're not just going to keep running titanium Stellars and never make a production CF or Micarta version.

CD Stellaris is quoted in a few different places/websites as 2.9 oz - some at 4oz, some at 5oz.. I suspect 3-4 is more the correct range.

Thanks. The Stellar’s ergos are great. A version that is an ounce or two lighter might just be the perfect EDC in my opinion.
