The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

any USA Shiro bros ever order from bladezilla in Canada? They have loads of Shiro stuff, but after the CAD to USD conversion, alot of it trends on the more expensive side of things. Not egregiously so, but a little expensive. Just wondering if anyone had purchased from them before and what that experience was like, with tarriffs and customs and whatnot
I have purchased from Mitch/Bladezilla several times. Great guy and great experience and amazing merchandise. We did message IRT the exchange rates. His site has everything listed in CAD. So it’s up to the payment processors or banks to determine the rate at the time of transaction. The actual charge from Amex came back higher than what I had converted.

A lot of times he stocks the unobtaniums. The exchange rate shouldn’t deter you if need something. There is a bit of a markup, but he’s got the goods. I will definitely buy from him again.

Yeah I will definitely purchase from him in the future, his selection is really great. Currently I have everything I initially wanted, but as i get more knife money I will check out what he has.

Not in my hands yet, but a Strip skinny. I honestly didnt like the look of it at first, but then it grew on me, and when i saw the CF scales, I had to have it. Just wish it was m390 and not s90v.

Personally I would rather s90v over M390. S110v is the stainless edge retention champ, s90v is only slightly behind but way easier to sharpen, m390 has slightly better corrosion resistance than both but at a slight edge retention downgrade. Give me the edge retention all day

The strip is awesome, it too has grown on me over time. The collab Shiros are always finished so cool

Astrum is my favorite! The rollers are from department 13, you can message them via Instagram. They're Russian, and will get back to you! Some models they have, some they don't. I might end up moving the production one, as I also have the Astrum touch on the way.

I have a fit strip, I love that thing. It's a pain to find the tool, and the pivot is a PIA to get apart

My Astrum was like that at first. It’ll loosen up the more you play with it and then settle in to that incredibly, snappy yet smooth action Shiros are known for. Both my quantum’s are a joy to flip. And the gunshot snap sound they make is very satisfying.
Oh its hitting now. My fingers just had to learn how to hold it properly without touching the frame.

If that's a Neon, what makes the Neon Lite different? Is it just a blade steel difference? I understand the different models now, but I'm still fuzzy on the different versions of a given model. Recon1 just restocked the Neon Lite so I was just curious
NeOn Lite has an entry level steel and no back spacer (adds structural rigidity and adds marginal safety by covering the blade when closed) whereby the lanyard hole is milled into the handle instead of the more elegant execution of having it in the backspacer.

He has Astrum rollers now? I got some F95 rollers back in the day.

May I ask what exactly do you mean by "entry level steel"?

From my experience a properly heat treated Elmax blade is pretty close to M390 in terms of edge retention. I'm very satisfied with Q95, which is even more affordable.

It's just more oriented in the market as a budget super steel. When a knife is offered in two different super steels and one of which is Elmax, the Elmax option is generally slightly cheaper. Case in point, Shiro. Absolutely nothing wrong with Elmax, still a fantastic steel. Especially with a Shiro heat treat, I'd wager that Shiro has the best Elmax on any production knife period. A recent test on the hrc database showed they are hitting over 62, tying for first place with custom maker SPK. We probably won't see many, if any, higher than that in the database.

Are most of shiro blades in 62 hrc? Im grtting s90v and was wondering what hrc it would be, couldnt find much info on that.

It would be 62 on the low side. On the database they had a sample test 62.8 and another 64.3

The lowest hrc they've had on the database is 58 for s30v, which they haven't offered that steel in years and they have since upgraded their heat treat protocol for all steels they use. If we throw that outlier out, the lowest they've tested is 62.2 for Elmax.

At the current time, Shiro is unmatched for heat treat. Spyderco is the closest but they still have the occasional outlier. With Shiros revised heat treat protocols, they simply do not have any bad results or outliers, it's impossible. It you are buying a modern Shiro, then it is guaranteed to have an optimal heat treat.

The most recent run of Neon Lite has a backspacer but still has Elmax steel.

Im unable to find the sinkevich bits. I ordered some cheap triangle bits.

While I LOVE shiro/sinkevich knives, the proprietary screws are f*cking annoying as all hell. Also the MRBS is very very annoying to clean and put back.

Wait until you try to take that pivot apart 😂

i dont mind the proprietary normal shiro screws, because they have been around for ages and there are multiple products available for purchase. and worst case, you can manage with the right screwdriver and some creativity. but i feel like making even more proprietary bits for certain collaborations is a bit excessive. they do look amazing, but its just too easy to buy one used and it not include the tools, and good luck finding them. furthermore if you even do find them, god save your wallet.

personally i dont mind the mrbs, its a nice opportunity for some zen focus. just dont interrupt me or i will rage
