Wait until Recon One has another buy a Shiro knife get a Shiro bead deal

Is this the $100 pivot bead which you are referring to? Unfortunately since I will have to pay the almost 9% LA county sales tax if I buy directly from Recon1, even a free Shiro bead during such promo is not an appealing enough deal for me.

I don't mind spending some money for a bead on a knife that I spent $500 and up on, but you're right, Casinostocks Casinostocks , the Shiro beads are stupidly expensive. I have one radiator-style Shiro bead--on my Hati--but I paid half price for it on the Exchange. I have one Damascus knife with a Zoe Crist Damascus bead on it, but that's been my limit. I do have several that cost in the $40 range, but have a lot from the Big River Site that cost anywhere from $4 to $20 each.

I sent you some links by PM to various sources and you can maybe line up some of these pics with those.

My only Shiro bead.

Hinderer beads are pretty sweet, too, and pretty reasonable at $10-25.

Or Gray Precision has some lanyard beads in different materials. For example, below is the Monster Gear Ti Bead for $40.00. They have a smaller ti bead for $20.00. I don't have any beads by Gray Precision but I do have one of their titanium thumb disks on both of my Emersons and the fit and finish is top-notch.

Hey guys, some questions on various steels used by Shiro.

Does Shiro limit certain steels to only their 3 Bears line, or only to their CD knives, exclusively? Do they do batches of each knife in several steels? I guess I'm wondering if any of the steels they use are more premium than others? Did the various steels evolve over time? Do they retire one steel when they go to a new one?

Thanks in advance.

TRfromMT TRfromMT , according to Shiro's rep, since the advent of the 1, 2, 3 Bears classifications in early 2017, blade steels are distributed across the serial lines thusly:

1 Bear (Basic)--S30V, Elmax, etc. Blades with no gimping and handles tumbled and/or with basic materials like G10 . The new F95NL, for example.
2 Bears (Advanced) type A--S90V, M390, Vanax37. No gimping, but more advanced scale material like CF. Think, the 111; or, type B S30V, Elmax, etc with gimping or 5/6ths grind, tumbled handles and/or advanced scale materials, like the NeOn line.
3 Bears (Maximum)--S90V, M390, Vanax37, gimping or 5/6ths grind, more advanced handles with satin finishes, anodization, or laser engraving. To that add MRBS with underlay washers--basically the new R Series (renewed) knives.

The higher ranges of knives--Custom Division, Collaborations, and Sergey's Full Customs include the better steels above but can add laminated or Damascus blades to the equation.

Shiro does seem to produce their knives in runs, as I've noticed that certain blade steels will show up for different models as knives are re-stocked in batches. Seemingly, a steel can be added for a run, get sold out, then not be used again in the next run. NeOn UltraLites are generally made with S30V, but there was what appeared to be a run of Elmax that sold out and has not made another appearance. Steels may also reappear if not used in an earlier run.

Edited for clarity.

Putting a lanyard on these Shiros has now become a must for me, more so on the 111 CF than the 95T as the clip on the 111 seems tighter when in the pocket and I don't get as good a grip on it as I do on the 95F, so it doesn't often come outta pocket with the first yank! therefore I'm mortified in case I accidentally drop it or them on the hard ground!

What reasonable lanyard beads do you aficionados recommend? Any sourcing would be much appreciates, but I'm afraid that the Shiro made / licensed eads are just too cost prohibitive for me.

My favorite bead in my stash is my Atwood Mega Lanslide, but all of my other beads are Maverick Workshop. The machining is second to none on them.

I received a Shiro pivot bead when I ordered from Recon 1 as a Father's Day promotion. I briefly attached it to the leather lanyard on my car key until the noise of it rattling against the key got it taken right off. I wanted something Shiro to carry around with me when I couldn't carry a knife. So much for that...

I thought it was in this thread that you gave me pointers on loosening a Shiro pivot that (apparently) has a healthhy dose of LocTite

Oh yeah. That was one whole page ago--short term memory must be fading fast.:eek:

I had to really cook a couple of mine then use some grabby rubber sheet and a death grip to free up the screws. The worst, oddly enough were the body screws on my 111. Nerve wracking as they're kinda small and the possibility of f'ing them was great. Really, really hot seems to work, though.

I've heard of guys supergluing a cross-piece to the pivot, then cleaning up with acetone when done.

Putting things back together, I never LocTite right off. I don't mind an occasional retightening and will only LocTite if something repeatedly loosens quickly or I'm afraid of losing a short-threaded part.
