The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

It's actually very timely that you ask this question. A BF member posted a Neon for sale earlier and names it as such. In the back of my mind I knew it was most likely a Lite or an Ultra Lite but checked anyway as I'd love to get hold of a Neon. It was a Lite in S90V which was somewhat tempting as I have no knives in that steel. But it was a rollercoaster of emotions ending in:

Casinostocks Casinostocks , until such time as you sign up over at the other forum, here's a paste-in from Tom, the Shiro rep that sums up the various NeOn variants to add to CPP CPP 's succinct description. The quoted text below is older, so no HatiOns.

"There are three varieties of NeOns (Custom Division and Sergey's full customs not included):
NeOn 3D - a very limited run with unique blade grind, 3D carved titanium handles, and roller bearings
NeOn Lite - your 'regular' production NeOn, with flat (2D) titanium handles, flat ground blade, backspacer, and multi-row ball bearings.
NeOn Ultra Lite - a simplified version of your production NeOn. The differences are in blade steels used (Lite uses M390/S90V or equivalents, Ulta Lite uses S30V and equivalents). Ultra Lite also has a standoff instead of a backspacer, and has no internal milling in the scales; all of this helps push the cost down. Ultra Lite runs on multi-row ball bearings, as well."

Nice to see someone else time all their screws to align the same way!

fun fact though, the newer custom divisions have a 'faux show side screw' that is aligned (and therefore is actually non-spinning, great for disassembly/reassembly) The real screw is on the lock side.

The older CD Seashell Hati I've taken the time to align. The Bears 111 is cool, the 3 screws came from the workshop pointed towards the middle of the handle (the screw closest to the pommel isn't visible) :)

A few of the Shiros that went up for sale this afternoon at a site I'm not sure I can mention here. In spite of the costly costs both Neons already have sales pending.

With much thanks and appreciation to my good BFC friend @coiledwire who not only hooked me up with this absolute beauty, but also gave me a very quick and timely tip on a NeOn Lite
which I was looking for. Hopefully that will be in Uncle Matty's inbox tomorrow, becoming my 4th and last (?) production Shiro for a while to add to: 111 CF / F95T / HatiOn Lite

Has anyone noticed the Shiros for sale at Knife Center? I remember noticed their inventory closely mirrored Recon1's but with a markup-in some cases a rather significant markup. This doesn't seem to be at all unethical but...

Was it the Neon Lite in S90V that you picked up?

Nope; I actually saw that one but passed up on it for a variety of reasons!

This is the one which I picked up, which accidentally was listed in the wrong section and my Bud CoiledWire texted me within a few minutes of it being posted. IMHO, a much better unit (M390 > S90V IMO, plus condition, etc...) and also I got better vibes from this member / seller

Just some pictorials as I have now also received the serial NeOn (Lite). After some feeling and fondling, I have gravitated more toward the NeOn Lite as opposed to the HatiOn Lite because the NeOn Lite has more heft at 3.4 OZ as opposed to the HatiOn Lite at 2.4 OZ (the cloth added .1 OZ!) but my preference is just by a smidgen as the HatiOn Lite has Vanax 37 which I prefer over the M390:

Really nice! The Neon was my first Shiro and quickly became my favourite EDC knife. One of the issues I have with my Neon is that it’s really slippery, even for titanium.
So I brought a HatiOn hoping the CF will add traction. I could only find one video review on the HatiOn (House of Wisedom’s). How is HatiOn’s action compared to the Neon? I’ve read it’s not as good as the Neon’s.

I haven't noticed any difference in the action between the Neon Lite and the HatiOn Lite, but I did find that the CF scale on the HatiOn does add significant grip as the CF is also textured.

For a while I preferred the HatiOn Lite over the Neon Lite but now that the former is no longer my newest in the Neon family the Lite is finding its way back into regular use; I'm usually not one to be concerned with minor differences in weight but as Casinostocks Casinostocks said due its added heft–if 1 once called as such! That said I do prefer both Lites over the Ultra Lite with the backspacer being the deciding factor.

Funny you ask that because @PharetH alluded to the same issues and had asked me the same question over at the Carothers Performance Knives subforum on this Site. After finding with them most of the afternoon, I've found that the NeOn Lite is a much better free dropper but both of them flip like a rocket (in fact, the HatiOn Lite may even be a little more rocketish!) but when it comes to free dropping, once I got the hang of the NeOn which is small in my hands just like the HatiOn Lite was, the NeOn free drops much more smoothly. I was not aware of such issues to this date and TBT, it doesn't bother me that the HatiOn Lite is more rigid other than the fact that its blade bit me once ever so slightly when dropping. As for the texturing on the CF side of the scale as compared to the Ti, yes its more noticeable when giving it the tactile exam, but as far as the grips go, the noticeable differences are negligible.
