The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

The F95T aka Turtle was the one Shiro bug which had bit me hard from the outset, although it was not my first ever Shiro! Nevertheless, after much addition by subtraction in the recent weeks and months, I have saddled myself with and settled down to 4 Shiros and my elusive Shiro-Pen. Here are my 2 serials plus the pen which I received today:

I love the looks of the F95Ts. I love full Titanium knives. However, I don't know whether to be happy (as in saving me $$$) or sad that it is under 4" as I have also sworn off of sub-4" blades.

Just be happy for the rest of us--more 95mm Shiros to go around. :D

As much of a headache my shiro has been to acquire (Canadian customs) and service (expensive round trip to Russian headquarters) I still love it.

My bronze S90v nudist is right up there in my top all time favorite folders. I missed a chance to pick up a nice M390 CF F3 on the Canadian exchange a while back. One of those sale threads you wish you didn't see. Haha

I will keep a slot open for another Shirogorov in the collection, it hits a sweet spot for my preferences in high end folders.

Quick question. In researching these knives, I have come across a handful of posts here and on other sites where someone has claimed the parts of these knives are made in China and then shipped to Russia where they are then assembled. Is there any truth to this?

Has anyone purchased a f95r19 yet, if so what your thoughts on the new handle pattern?

There was one for sale on the Exchange a few days ago. I suspect that Mike aka Pharmagator Pharmagator may have snagged it ;)

нет!

Shirogorov has an official subforum on USN where you need to be a signed-up member to access. The Shiro Knives Rep has specifically addressed these rumor and innuendos in there and has stated them to be absolutely incorrect, inaccurate and false!

Absolutely ZERO truth to that.
I second that. Absolutely not true.

Tom is the Shirogorov team member that hosts their pages over at USN. I'm sure he won't mind me quoting from the OP of a thread he started over there in response to both periodic rumors and a recent reviewer's assertion their knives (or any of their parts) are made in China.

"I would like to officially state that we do not make our knives in China. We never have, and don't intend to, either. By 'do not' I mean that not only do we not order our knives to be made in China, we do not source any parts from there. Neither do we outsource any part of our production process to subcontractors at all. This by definition also implies that we do not outsource any subcontracting work to China (as we don't have subcontractors, period). Everything we make is produced in its entirety in our workshop in Yaroslavl. Deisign, CAD work, prototyping, grinding, CNC, heat treat, stonewashing, satin, polishing, making some smaller components (such as roller bearings), laser engraving, sharpening, assembly, fitment, finetuning, repairs, etc, you name it - everything is done in-house. With the exception of design of our collabs which are based on existing customs (though they are reworked by Sergey, the 'base' for these projects does not originate at the workshop - and we are fully open about that).

Concentration of all the production-related processes to one single location is done to ensure proper quality of our knives, and also the reason behind the fact that if you want work done on your Shirogorov knife you would need to send it in to our workshop in Yaroslavl.

We do source some components (what will become knife parts during the manufacturing process) internationally. We buy blade steels both from the US and Europe (but you knew that already; just look at the lineup of steels available in our folders). Some minor hardware is sourced from Germany. Quite a lot is made in-house from steel blanks. Our handle materials are predominantly procured locally in Russia - both titanium, G10, and CF."

Thank you all for clearing that up for me. I will check out USN. And thanks for reposting Tom’s reply ChazzyP ChazzyP . That made it perfectly clear where they are made and where all their parts come from.

My F95T is in my pocket today. In the past couple weeks I have acquired a few new folders and have cycled them into the daily carry rotation. Each has been nice, but I find that each has helped me see even more ways that the Shiro is such a superior product.

Flipping action - for a stout, 4" blade, this thing is not a tank. It is elegant. Difference between a 70's muscle car, and a ferrari.
Pocket clip. Near perfection for inserting, holding and extracting knife.
Blade - perfect thickness behind the edge, fantastic sharpenability, fantastic grind
Handle - no hot spots. None.

Dayum what a nice knife.

Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to decide between the f19 and the turtle.
Get the turtle, everyone likes it and it's a better seller on the secondary market.
That F95R19 is very cool and no doubt a fine piece, but you're probably right about the Turtle, Ajack--I had mine in hand as I read these posts. I'm otherwise disappointed that a Platinum BF member failed to dispense the expected answer to "Get Both!"

Well, since I have both (not the newest pattern) I thought it would go without saying :p
