The BladeForums 2022 Traditional Knife Thread

Dont forget the brown bear that escaped from the Warragamba African Lion safari in 1970s...reputedly still roaming free.....but of all the introduced species gone feral the domestic cat is by far the most deadly.
Very true, buy like feral horses they have "cute" protection. I used to work in environment for the govt and did a lot of rehabilitation projects. In the contracts people were required to control foxes, rabbits etc. But they specifically couldn't kill cats.
They had to be trapped, taken into the local pound and desexed.

Cats, unlike say a fox are obligate carnivores. That means they cannot survive on anything other than meat. Foxed can and will survive of fruit and plants if meat is scarce.

Gary @Gary W. Graley said; "I found those sharp corners at the transition of the swedge to be...well...sharp, so I softened them a little on each side and for me it doesn't hurt the look, and now, it doesn't hurt when I accidentally brush against it them either."

Yeah, mine has sharp spots there too, and also has one hell of a sharp burr on the blade spine where it meets the backspring when the knife is open.

Haven't seen anyone mention it ... and only picky thing I can find wrong with mine is the covers don't go all the way to the edge of the liners.
Doesn't affect use in any way nor diminish my appreciation. Only just that now I can't unsee it LOL

Of course I can't find the pic now, but somewhere in here there was a closed knife and it almost looked as though there was a proud tip. No issues with that?

I only have one GEC but from it and what I've read of their quality I'm surprised to see your knife like that. Bit disappointing.

If you want perfect, seek out the best handmade knives you can find. These are factory production knives and will vary knife to knife, not to mention that natural materials can shrink, expand, and move around so in a few months that scale could be flush. It could be flush by soaking it in oil for a day, who knows.

No proud tip here. Only GEC I've every had that my fingertip would slightly catch on is a 99 Wallstreet with a Wharncliffe blade. Minor touch to the kick easily corrected that.

I'll agree with that 100% but will add that in my limited experience, I've found that the "soaking in oil" works best with older knives whose covers shrank from carry, use and age ... not so much with factory fresh new knives made from premium materials.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm new to the knife collecting world and the world of GEC. Prior to receiving mine from the resale value of second hand knives and the general esteem with which they are held I kind of expected an almost custom level of QC.
I do love mine however and wouldn't sell it. And if a nice lambsfoot or 88 came up I'd seriously consider buying it so it's not as if I don't rate them.

Take a look at Post 2757
Ah, I missed that but there you go. My eyes must work on occasion. They are beautiful looking knives at any rate and have gone a fair way in making me want both a nice clip point and an ebony handled knife!

I may not be able to buy another knife for quite some time after just forking out for an ivory handled folder, but it is my birthday soon and maybe the wife will pick me out something nice if I'm lucky!

On the positive side, that really black ebony is quite stunning.

I've noticed some chatoyance in mine as well. More so on the pile side than the shield side (not that there is a shield, but you know). Its hard to photograph even in the daylight, but in the hand its pretty cool.

Don't worry about it. Nobody expects 100% perfection out of a pocketknife, but they do get tetchy about GEC around here...
