The Cinguedea, One of the Most Effective Personal Weapons Of All Time

IMO the best looking sword type to ever have been used in Italy is the Schiavona.

Id prefer that over the OP blade, if I had to have only one sword from Italy.

It can of course be argued, that the Schiavona was used by the Dalmatian guards of the Doge.

(No, not those Dalmatians).

So I guess the question is... would you feel under armed going up against a guy with a rapier?
Since they were both prevalent at the same time....

Or maybe this was more of a weapon of the untrained masses for protection from the cudgel and short knife crowd?

Hey buddy

In speaking of one the size of the CS version in a closed quarters scenario ....... no

The Cinq in this size is similar to a Big Bowie or Tanto .......they pack a big punch in a smaller package and enable you to slash and move were the Rapier needs more room and not a good slasher

On another note ....How’s the Bowie Wally ?

JParanee, since you like to display weapons how about having that Cinq engraved? There is a lot of metal to work with and it could look pretty amazing IMO with the right design.

I’m not a big engraving guy and I don’t mind it on some fine guns but due the cost of Good engraving if I would choose to pay for an engraved Cinq I would start off with a custom variant not a prouduction one ...think Mike Quesenberry

I must say it doesn’t look to shabby for a cheap sword even with a case of MS Bowie’s underneath it :)

Preface: I know NOTHING about swords. I mean, I know a tiny amount. Not really NOTHING. But the amount I know about swords could fit into a thimble, with room to spare.

That said, a cinqueda that long and wide looks like it would be awfully heavy for the one hand handle that it has. I would imagine it being unwieldy.

Nah. The fullers are there for a reason, and the broad base of the blade assists in bringing the center of gravity lower on the blade, though it would certainly still be far enough in front of the hand to make it cut with authority. I'd guess probably about 6" out. Won't be the fastest for point work (not going to be using wrist actions to influence the point much) but it looks like it'd thrust reasonably well, too. Cinquedeas have a lot of variation in tang width, with some being quite narrow, but I reckon that one has a wider tang than most swords.

Joe, The Bowie is good.
I'll be happier when I can grip it better... I chipped a couple knuckles a while ago and still can't close my fist completely.
Tried to play ping pong and almost threw the paddle.
Don't want to do that with the new bowie... don't want 12" of sharp steel flying around.
Thanks for asking.

The cinquedea is an interesting piece for sure.

Who's the creepy naked dude in the reflection?:p:thumbsup:

The question wouldn't be how a cinquedia would do against a rapier. The question would be which would be better against multiple, lighly armed ruffians, let's say armed with clubs, or whatever.

Obviously, this isn't a pretty picture for you no matter what you're armed with, but wouldn't it be better to slash. I know from my own sparring and boffer action, the best way to clear a space around you is to slash. Even if you have a gauche, you're pretty limited. I'm afraid with a rapier, they would just pin you, especially in a tight alley where the ambush would be to their advantage.

As to the blade being broad to provide more decoration space... The blade was in a sheath, remember? Take a look at that handle. Do you think all that weirdness was for decoration? It screams, "I've got good reason for this," to me.

By the way, I made a huge error. 15th century cavalry, especially in Italy

By the way, I made a huge error. 15th century cavalry, especially in Italy, wouldn't use swords at all. That was the age of heavy plate, so they would use axes, maces, and hammers.

Schiavona was one of the best designs ever. There were ones with allmost rapier-like fast and nimble thrusting blades and also massive cutters. Schiavona could have both finger- and thumbring, giving extraordinary controll combined with great protection given by complex hilt. A work of genius.

Yes and beautiful to boot.

Further more useful and pricier than the blade in the OP in original (and repro) configuration.

OP, what a big load of Bravo Sierra!

Of course it is! Admittedly, I've only touched a cinquedia one time in my life LOL. I've just learned that the best way to elicit conversation is to make "Greatest, and Best" statements. Nobody can resist them.

It is interesting that such a strange sword style came out of nowhere in response to a need.

Hmmmm ...

That was a very interesting video

Just as in a period of Japanese history the swords became very ornate it didn’t mean some were not still of high quality

It seems that these came from a period of high art and they mimicked ancient bronze pieces

Very interesting blade and back story

After playing with the cheap CS variant I do believe these would make formidable weapons

Far from the greatest combat blade in history but I would not feel handicapped with one in a pinch

 Dang , dang , DANG ! Now you all got me wanting to try one , just to feel how it handles . I WILL overcome this irrational impulse ...maybe ?
