The Competition Finish Is Gone . . . . . .

Thanks Jax......I didn't get upset about Jerry getting rid of the comp finish....I am a big fan of it but his reasons make perfect sense. I was taken aback by the comments you made on the stars and I also want to say Im sorry for shooting back with the infraction comment that I made. What Mach said was very good. I would never come here and disrespect Jerry but we should be able to comment on things in a reasonable manor.

George....that's funny! Spot on

Not to derail this thread...I stated my affection for CF and my sorrow of its departure, but I have to comment on this threat of "outing" by a "moderator".
Very bad form :grumpy::thumbdn:
As stated previously.....this is a forum, a discussion forum. Are we all to walk in lock-step?
Jerry stated" the competition finish is gone" and not everyone is happy about that. I have spent a lot of money on knives and this isn't soup nazi.....is it?

If anyone really misses the competition finish all you really need to do is buy a coated Busse and strip. :D

Not really. Depends on the knife. I have stripped a HD that looked somewhat like CF but when I did a ASH-1 it was beyond my skill and tools to give it a getto satin finish and I am fairly handy doing stuff like that.

I feel like the only disrespectful people in this thread are those referenced by Jerry, wanting their Competition Finish turned in to a satin finish for free. That's a pretty crappy way to take advantage of someone's awesome customer service.

Too bad, I think CF should still be available off the record for those seasoned Hogs in the know. The ones who understand exactly what CF is, and exactly what it isn't. Too bad some noobs complaining about roll marks ruined it for everyone. If they didn't want roll marks, they should have got a coated or DC blade. I suppose you could just have the custom shop do a higher than normal grind, and strip the blade yourself to achieve a similar effect. It was my understanding that CF wasn't just lack of coating, but a taller than normal convex grind as well. This also goes to show the awesome Busse customer service. Jerry was basically taking a hit on a bunch of them, just to satisfy the customer. He could have just told the customer that they needed to pay for satin etc. It shows that obviously he will keep his word, and stand by his customer/product even at a financial loss.

Tool marks are PART of the CF..from what I have seen. You asked for it and you got it.
I am more than a little disappointed...I WANTED the TGLB in the "Daryl" version....unfortunately,"wants" take back seat to "needs".

Ouch! This really got heated over the last 24 hours. I wish I'd been able to order a few knives with the CF! So this means I'll have to wait for a special offering from Busse or find knives I want on the Exchange with the CF.

FWIW, I really wanted to order my SHBM in CF, but I understand it is BUSSE COMBAT, and that means the Boss makes business decisions for HIS business. If he decided he can't offer the CF anymore, I will sadly accept that, and encourage him to offer some special editions in CF whenever he can and maybe consider a waiver. It's not my company, and I wouldn't presume to tell Mr. Busse how to run his. Most owners don't make decisions like this lightly, and I'm sure he didn't like having to cut this offering.

Is the poll that asks if Busse should discontinue the competition finish disrespectful as well? It's questioning an action that has already taken effect and probably cannot be reversed.

Rating this thread, having a poll thread, it's all voicing an opinion. The interwebz is getting too serious.

I'm glad I don't have facebook or twitter, I'd hate to see the bloodbath other there regarding this decision

YOWZA!!!!!!!!

All is well gang!

I loved the CF on my own knives so much that I offered it publicly. It was crazy popular and we offered it for nearly 6 years....... Here's my original post from October of 2007

If You Like Ugly. . . Howz About A Competition Blade Finish???

Did I scare you with that one boys???. . . . I know I sceeeaart myself !

So, what exactly is a Competition Blade Finish you may ask???. . . Purty darned ugly my friends. . . purty darned ugly!

When we run new designs for our destructive testing we don't worry too much about the finish. . . but boy can those puppies cut!!!. . . We put a zero convex bevel along the edge that screams!!!!. . .

We don't worry a bit about finish, since the name of the game is performance. . . We usually take a blade straight from the furnace and do a light pass on a wheel and then it's all about the edge. . . .

It is difficult to put this type of edge on a regularly finished knife since the edge finishing process usually rides up fairly high on the bevel. . . .Very cool!!!

We leave behind all of the peen marks, INFI dimples, and anything else that might be there. Sometimes we double cut them before edging. . .sometimes we don't. There is no set criteria as to how ugly these blades can get. . . .

Handles can be a bit rough as well. . . .fit and finish? . . . Uh, probably not gonna find it here kids.

These are beaters of the first degree. . . You'll never have to worry about marring up the finish. . . because we've already done that for you!

So, I guess the question is. . . If we priced these near the regular combat grade price point, would you be interested in buying one?

Here's a pic of the Jack Hammer with the Competition Finish:

CompetitionFinish.jpg

I think the biggest problem we had was that some blades were fairly clean and free of these marks while others were sometimes covered with them. This of course led to many, many returns with requests for either a replacement with a cleaner one or tool mark removal. We often obliged with some tool mark removal which meant taking a loss on a number of these blades while at the same time leaving many customers with a poor opinion of what they perceived to be a quality control issue. I can live with the financial loss but the loss of reputation was really the big issue for us.

You'll most likely see the competition finish offered again in the future on a small select number of "show knives" since folks can see them before buying and there is little room for confusion.

Note also that: THE CF WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE CUSTOM SHOP AT THIS TIME!!!!

I hope this helps to calm the waters.

Jerry

Just a guess. Since the CF knives were all about performance, I'd guess the knives that are too rough to cut well got 'blasted.

I guess it would have been nice to have been given a heads up on the CF. "We are think of stopping the option of....", " In a month the CF will no longer be available". just to give a little notice.

I agree with this. I had a CF TGLB with black paper grips and an OD Green Buy Brown kydex that recently walked off in Murfreesboro TN. I was just about to replace it. :(

Maybe I can catch one at Knob Creek.
If it

I understand the reputation issue and wanting to take care of the upset customers. However, there appears to be an accepting customer base here that understands the following...."You get what you get and you don't get upset." I believe if the customer signed off on a "Competition Finish Waiver" that it would satisfy all parties involved. Especially if there were a variety of pictures on the ordering pages highlighting the possible end product. Either way, I'm glad it's not gone forever.

Geez... it's hard to argue with a genius. :o

But I absolutely love the Comp finish on INFI and am disappointed with the decision. Stripping is fine, but it does devalue the knife since it is not factory done. But I must say that it is amazing that a company cares so much about a 'problem' that it is willing to disappoint the vast majority of it's customers to satisfy a few. Reputation is important and if Jerry feels this is necessary, so be it. His heart is certainly in the right place. It's his company and I'll continue to be a customer. It's a great product Busse produces.

Shouldn't someone be saying.... "Lets Drink"???

:D

.

I'm just as disappointed as anyone about the discontinuation of the CF but I totally understand that Jerry values his and the whole Busse crew's reputation more than profit and I do respect his decision.

Cheers :very_drunk:
