THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Dear Sam

I am looking forward to see new videos of your knives.I d also like to ask you - do you make only your standard HH knives or would you be also up to making larger hh blade, based on same system? Let's say 11-13 inch blade....

Thank you for time to reply

Hey Seriousbladeno1, thank you. I will have a new video coming soon on HH knives, I hope you like it. To answer your question, yes I do larger blades and some custom work. Email me if you want at wilsoncustomknives@gmail.com. I haven't bought a maker's membership in awhile and don't want to sidetrack the thread. Thank you.

Anyone have direct experience with the RPW Robson one piece HH knives?

I normally won't buy without handling a knife that expensive, but after a few years of haunting knife shows and never finding one, I took the plunge and have one coming.

I have owned a couple, gorgeous fit and finish as you would expect from a machine shop. The non threaded cap is a cool concept. It works quite well actually and apparently tried in back pressure (?) to help secure it, along with the o-rings of course. A2, so a solid steel. You should like it. Very "Chris Reevish"....

Thanks, A2 is one of my favorite steels. Mine is the later "threaded" cap version, I had the seller confirm that before ordering. I took the plunge partly because I sat on the fence to long over the Chris Reeve ones, and then he stopped making them. Prices have soared since. Hope to someday pick up a good used one reasonable. :)

I have one. Great knife. I prefer it to the CRK HH knives that I have.
Bulletproof.

I have one. Very nicely finished. I'm still not sold on the o-ring, at least with a lanyard attached. Very, very solid. Good geometry for casual use, but not great.

Yep, that's the one! Thank you. [emoji106]
What happened to Mr. Martin?
I am very sorry to hear what happened to Newt Martin... I had a good experience dealing with him.

I just learned this today:

"James B Lile. ALL BLACK RAMBO "The Mission" knife. . THIS KNIFE IS ONE OF ONLY 25 made after the first 100 numbered knives were made .
James B like - the Arkansas knifesmith page # 359.
Thanks go to emeraldcity01 for the info.
They were discontinued because of the black scratching from the sheath
."

It so happens that the one I have was also an all-black knife, but the paint was so crappy I had to have it replaced with a black Cerakoat:

This probably drops the value quite a bit, but I couldn't care less... These knives get sold for a premium because of their rarity, but really the original black coating is no better than what you would get from a rattle can, and probably far below a good rattle can of today... It was hands-down the crummiest paint I have ever seen on a knife... Fortunately it came off easily.

I don't think you should pay a premium for this knife on account of the poor paint finish, regardless of rarity... In general basic un-numbered Liles are sound and straight but can be quite rough, except it seems for the two-tone polished edges ones, which really deserve to be worth more...

A weird peculiarity of many of the original Lile "Missions" (which I don't particularly care for) is that their handles are angled slightly upward: This is consistent and visible in most photos... The handle is straight and square to the guard, but the guard is set at a very slight downward angle to the ricasso... I think the Next generation ones by Vaughn Neeley are fully straight, but note their edges are way thicker...

In general on a weight/size/effectiveness ratio, the Mission knife is still the best hollow handle I have ever tested, just not my favourite design... Even the sawback is the best...

Jackal,

Yeah I heard that too!! Poor Newt!! He was such a pleasure to work with! And he gave me a super birthday gift...well..several...that I didn't even know we're coming.

When he contacted me...and Right On Time too...to tell me my knife was finished, he sounded even more excited for me than I was! LOL!

And he sounded very shocked and surprised when I paid him in full, immediately, and right away too! That right there told me that he must deal with some slow payers!!

But that is the way I love things to be done...On Time, Paid For Immediately, and then packaged and Shipped Immediately or within the next 2 or 3 days as promised!!

Compromises can be made..I don't mind if something comes up and I have to wait a couple extra days! It's not like I Don't have knives to use already! But what makes my skin curl and my Italian temper rise is when the person has No Contact right after they get their money!! Ooooohh that just urks my ass when that happens! LOL I know at times it just cannot be helped and I know that! And I totally understand that once contact is made!

But that is just me and ordering a custom knife is supposed to be fun on both sides of the track. If one side is just happy and reaps the benefits while the other one is made to wait and just left in the dark, then it gets to Not be pleasant on one side. Anytime there arises questions like "OK, I made the guy's knife...why ain't he paying for my work and the knife?" OR "OK, I paid and honored my word...Why am I still waiting for a simple sign or contact letting me know my knife is on its way??!"

That is when the fun and excitement turns into frustrations, possible regrets, nasty messages being sent or nasty call messages being left!! And eventually, that just makes the knifemaker wishing he would of Never made the knife, or the customer saying like, "Ohh No, I gotta endure this again?? I just endured this same thing with a diff knifemaker last time I ordered a knife!! Ordering custom knives Ives to be made is not fun anymore...it's just one big headache and I am just not giving business to Any other knife maker"

And although understandable, getting that way is just not fair to those knifemakers that are always honest and dependable! Well, I am getting off topic here, lol...I'll switch back to topic! LOL!

Anyway, again, Newt Martin is Exceptional to do business with and order from. He truly does not deserve getting that leukemia crap! And I hope with all my heart that he beats that crap and sends it right back to Hell from where it came.

Anyway, I also really want the Aparro 9.5 inches! I was going to order it at first...But decided that the closest I will prob ever come to owning a Rambo Mission knife or one that resembles it, is the MCE II! So I chose that one instead.

And I was planning to order the 9.5" Aparro knife from Newt this year, as soon as Andy finished my own designed knife! Well, like a month after...But I wanted to.get it paid for first!

That is done now, but now can't order the Aparro until and unless Newt recovers, gets in remission, and starts making knives again!! I thought about getting the Boker Plus production version of it. I've heard nothing but great things about that one. And I would've done already bought it if Boker made it with a 9.5" blade or close to.it, or if they ever Do, and use a high end steel for making it!

But that tiny little 7 or 7.5" midget knife blade...well...that is just way to small of blade for me. I just don't care for those smaller blade knives...no smaller than at least 8.5" blades!

Now, I Did buy that Extrema Ratio Doberman IV knife...blade just over 7"...and the Kizlyar Supreme X hh knife...because I felt like I should have at least a couple smaller knife to carry as an additional secondary knife! But that is the only reason!!

LOL Ohh Jackal, bro...I just looked and realized how long my post was here!! Hahaha I'm sorry buddy but at least it's not one big Wall Of Text! Man I used to just type those...no spaces...not here tho, but the first knife forum I went to!! And man oh man, did I really make folks mad, and got made fun of!!

I've come a Long way since those Ole Walls of Text days of mine!! Now, as you can see, I have learned to use paragraphs and spaces!! Hahahahaha!

But anyway, my apologies again for the length of this thing! I will try to keep them shorter.from now on.Jackal Ole buddy...lol OK?

Sorry for the BIG delay Demon...
In the last month I've been very busy, and I forgot to check this fantastic thread! Congratulations for the length of your answer, wow, it took me a while to translate all your whole post, hahahaha!!
But I did not understand one thing... Right now, It's impossible to place an order for a Martin knife (and of course wait for his full recovery), or is it possible? This speech is only a matter for the "waiting list"..
When Mr. Martin will be back on top form, probably it begins to make new knives starting in chronological order in this waiting list. I really hope that he recovers soon..

Anyway, until the last month, my favorite Martin was absolutely the Apparo 9.5 ".. But.... Then...... A couple of weeks ago, I saw a FANTASTIC model, of course always a Martin.. And my certainties on my favorite Apparo collapsed!!
This is that knife...... The Martin Caiman TAD Gear Limited Edition!!!
I love it..... I really love it!! Maybe in part because I also love the TAD Gear. In my opinion it's really been a successful duo!
The rear cap I think is copper? And it is already included the compass inside the cap..

That is so dang nice - congrats.

I like a lot of HH knives, but its great to see these with shorter blades as well.

Here is my Brand New Handmade Hollow Handle knife I just received TODAY! Everything is hardened D2 steel...Blade, guard, handle, endcap...All is D2 steel! Blade is 58° to 60° Rockwell HRC! Blade is 10.5" and the handle is 6" long at my request! I prefer a longer handle.

Plus, with the blade being a bit longer, the longer handle makes the whole knife more balanced. Blade is also 516" thick at the spine!

The knife is a cross between the Rambo Mission knife ife aka Rambo 2 movie knife made by Jimmy Lile, and the Commando movie knife made by the recently deceased.Jack Crain!!

The knife design was a collaboration design between me and a very good friend of mine from Louisiana, where I was raised, who actually Made the knife!!

I still have to wrap the handle, add lanyard wrist strap, and I am also going to get a new Sheath made for the knife because I prefer sheaths with sharpener pouches, fire steel key compartment, and legtie part. I can do without the fire steel key compartment, but the sharpener pouch and the legtie option are definite must-haves!!

516 inches at the spine? Must weigh as much as a battleship anchor.

Hello,

Yeah it's hefty but not bad as ya think!! Besides, I am a rather big, muscular guy so hefty knives are more to my liking!! Carrying a small 7" knife or 8" knife is like carrying a plastic butter knife to me!! LOL!!

Well, I might be exaggerating a bit there but still, I am all about the bigger, more hefty knives. I just wrapped the handle of this one in military grade 4-strand mini Para cord!! Oh wait, I think I used my Kevlar cord for this one!! Yeah, I think that's the one I actually used. I have Both. Got it nice and TIGHT too!!! OD Green color and it looks Fantastic, I think. I am going to add the dangling OD Green lanyard tomorrow for the wrist strap, which I like!!

And soon I will be Shipping the knife to a friend of mine to have a better custom fitted sheath made for it...One that has a round diamond sharpener pouch in the middle of it, and a snap strap to go over the knife and keep it safely in the sheath. I am also going to have a legtie added.

I think he was teasing you because of your typo (?) 516" is 13 meters (43 feet).

How thick is it really?

Exactly. That's a spicy meatball! Or at least one thick assed blade. Five hundred sixteen inches.
