The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Doing pretty great at the moment!

Been experimenting with course edges on s30v and I'm loving the results. A little while ago I bought a second (all black) PM2 because......well......I wanted to. And cuz my digi cam satin version was getting a little boring:D

Anyway,..... I put a awesome looking course edge on it, and it's been working really well. Doesn't treetop or anything like that, but the edge is toothy as hell and bites like a mofo:thumbup:

I find that it's much easier for me to have a nice flat, even bevel when I stick got the lower grits. Once I start polishing, my crappy angle inconsistency starts messing with the edges and convexing them or giving them weird micros bevels, and they don't cut well enough to fix the mistakes

Nice. I'm still on the edge I put on my DT a month ago, still shaving. I think you'll find that if you strop at very low angles and extremely lightly through each stage of stropping, you'll keep your edge's bite while still refining the edge very far!

Also, my good buddy prepped up a humidor for me at the shop he works at, went and picked it up today. Most of the cigars in there are gift from Quiet (you the man!!!).

Quiet has always seemed like a cool guy to me:thumbup:

And I'll give your stropping method a go. I was always under the impression that you had to match the bevel exactly, but maybe I've been doing it wrong after all. That would definately explain why my edges don't improve much after stropping. I could be rounding them off a little too much

He's a good dude, no doubt! When you strop low like that, your tendency to lift and put less effective micro bevels on your edges is decreased by leaving more room for error. With just the right pressure, due to the semi flexible nature of a leather strop, you'll still hit the edge from apex to the top of the bevel, but not enough to put on a micro bevel unintentionally or enough to round off the edge provided you're careful to keep the pressure consistent, and delicate (for S35VN anyway, some steels you can obviously use more pressure). I'm sure people have other opinions regarding the matter, just sharing my $0.02 based on my personal experience.

Yeah this new strop I've been using (the knivesplus strop block) is a lot softer than my last one, so I can see how your method might be a fix for my problem. Thanks man

Krissig - that is so awesome! Knives Plus used to be my local shop!

I used to live in Amarillo, Tx. Knives Plus was one of the first places I found when I moved there. It doesn't hurt that there is a great gun shop literally right next door!

Their prices are very good for a brick and mortar shop. The owners are very nice, very knowledgable, and they are straight shooters. They give you their honest opinion on their own merchandise and try to help you choose what would work best for your personal needs. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Small world, huh?

been in a slump, really wanted to like a knife i have been eyeing, got a chance to use before buying and disliked the knife action, really wanted to like it :(

AntDog, without turning this thread into the smoking thing again, I just wanted to share with you and the guys that supported me that today marks 15 days cigarette free. Now I still smoke cigars, but no more frequently than before. I've had a few beers and passed on cigarettes too so I think I've finally got the habit beat, and I feel amazing! Thanks again for prodding me about it when we first talked.

Congratulations! Now you just need to start putting that $5 bucks in a jar everyday, and you'll have that sebenza in no time.

Thanks man! I've saved up $52 just since I quit. I take my pack money and put it in a box. Yessir, few months of saving and my lack of cigs will buy me my next DT. Not that I'm not happy with the two Sebenzas I've got left! The real question after the knife is...Seamaster Planet Ocean, Submariner, or GMT Master II?

Can't go wrong with Timex.(I'm assuming those are watches) So I've been Thinking about a new sebenza when and if I sell a handful of my knives, and I'm starting to lean towards a micarta 25. Then I made the mistake of checking the retail price $520! I wasn't prepared for that.

You should be able to score a used one off of the exchange for a good bit less! Good luck! And yeah, they are watches. I've had and have tons of decent watches but never a piece of the calibre I have listed above.

Excellent! Congratulations! I'm proud of you man!

It's day 25 for me. Still not smoking, still no cravings. I've also went from 12mg nicotine in my vape down to 6mg. After I'm on that a while I'll go to 3, then 0, then maybe give up vaping too. Maybe not. Without the nicotine, there's not much in it.

Oh, if I could recommend one if your choices of watches, I'd go with the Submariner. They are sublime. They are, IMO, the quintessential Rolex.

To add some knife content, I used "ancient stabby" today to make dinner. I've had this knife a good long time! A2 tool steel, 1/4" thick, hollow ground, but still slices like a demon with laser beam eyes.

Oh, I meant to add - no problem on the "prodding". We all need a gentle push now and again.

Like my brother told me "a few days is a good start, 11 days is proof". You sir, have proved it. Congrats again, and I hope we can stay free of the "stank sticks".

I've been wearing a g-shock my cousin gave me for about 8 months. Before this I wasn't a watch person(and I'm still not), but this thing is WAY to freaking complicated. It's been an hour off ever since the last time change, because I don't feel like making the 30 min call to casio to figure out how to change it. I'll probably pick up a $20 Walmart watch soon haha.
Speaking of let downs, I was looking at the prices that regulars are going for. Let's just say that wont be happening any time soon. There's just something about having a knife in my pocket that's worth almost half as much as my car that sais "I might have my priorities a little mixed up" haha.

The recent "Elephant Tusk Banning" thread has got me thinking.
(Hypothetical morbidity) I wonder what kinda market there would be for knife scales and 1911 grips made from the bones of fallen enemy targets.
Imagine how much money can be had for a classic slip joint with scales with decorative inlays made from Bin Laden's teeth.

Yeah I'm not touching that one...

Cool bro!

Yeah they definately seem like a good knife shop to me. Its also great that they're online too, or else I never would have known about them or been able to get one of their great strops!

Does anyone know if they are a BF associated dealer? I can't remember.
