The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Great stuff man! Whoever gets the sage is a very lucky person.
I'm still in awe of that anodized micarta insingo. I've always been curious if micarta would react to the process. It really looks phenomenal. One of those is definitely on my short list.

I'm really digging that color on the Insingo myself. I've tried to match it before and always been a little too bronze in the past or overdone to where it starts turning purple. Micarta doesn't react to the process really, the new look the inlays haven taken on will soon fade and return to normal. Actually, someone in the CRK sub, I think Cody, showed huge blocks of micarta being used as electrical insulation (I think) in machinery at their job site. Pretty cool stuff.

Uh-oh! You caught me! But, yeah, she knows. :)
I was messing around with a new sharpener at work yesterday (so I had a lot of knives with me), and I noticed the clip screws were loose on my Varga custom. I wouldn't dare risk losing it, and I still had half a workday to get through, so I threw her CQC-6K in my pocket. When I got home she saw the skull clip and said "hey, that's MY knife!"
I explained what happened, and she kindly let me borrow it. (Since I sharpened her Rat 2 to a mirror polished razor edge)
Good eye brother!

Just wanted to let you all know my Vesper is back in bidness. Just took a couple drops of loctite on the screws, and absolutely no wiggle... So my wife got her CQC-6K back, but I dig my Vesper quite a bit better! :D

Very nice! I would kill to get my hands on a lg. insingo cf inlay.
I also had a new knife day.
I'll be honest. So I ordered the Fantoni HB01 pretty much convinced that I would immediately find a flaw and return it, because it has been pretty hard finding a large knife that fits all of my requirements ( great f and f, good blade to handle ratio which has been the hardest to come across, not too bulky/ overbuilt, etc...) Then I intended on using the returned credit to soften the blow on a new CRK.
Well I'm happy to say that the only way this knife could have better fit my requirements were if I went custom. One of my only gripes is the useless flipper tab. I really wish they would have strengthened the detent a tad and extended it a hair to make it functional or removed it altogether. I am just happy that I can quit looking for that "perfect" 4" knife (for now) and start saving for another sebenza. Also, I wasn't sure if a g-10 liner lock/ s35v knife could really justify almost $300, but again I was wrong. The tolerances are beyond excellent. There is ZERO play in any direction. The g-10 kind of steps down to the ti liners giving it a slight border which breaks up the monotony of plain black scales. The hardware has a nice worn in finish. The second finger groove makes for a very comfortable/ solid grip. And man is this thing breaking in quick. It has only been a few hours, and I've already seen a significant change in smoothness.
Again, I have only had this thing for a few hours, so I'm sure I could double this list after really using it.
Whoa, when I started typing I did not intend to write a novel...

Thanks dudes.

SSS- All I do is refinishing (satin, high polish) and anodizing . That may change in the future if I have the time to pick up some new tricks.

I went a different route with the Sage 2. The original combo looked good but not on the Sage 2 (brown and blue). Instead I went with an almost grey cobalt for the main color and hot violet edging for the highlights. Hopefully whoever gets this will enjoy it lots. I'm actually going to be making a specific thread for this so I can keep it open to all/most members.

Good to hear!

And good to see you're back to posting:p

Awwwww man - damn! Looking good! I'm digging the CF. So fresh and so clean!

Thanks Dog, it hasn't left my pocket since I goy it. I think it really IS the one:thumbup:

I'm being totally serious when I say I won't be buying any more folders for a long long time. Probably going to sell of a good chunk of my already existing collection as well. I've already put everything besides this one and the wood inlay into storage because none of the others compare.

Sorry mang. Life gets in the way sometimes. *shrug* I post when I can!

Not a problem mang, just commenting:D

In custom news, I've been in contact with Dario and he says the knife should be done by the end of the week. He got it back from hardness testing and started grinding today. He also says the CF scales and red liners are done and ready to go on the knife. Shouldn't be much longer now!

And I think it it'll line up perfectly with my dads birthday dinner and get together that's happening the weekend after his birthday. So that's good

Thanks.

So I'm finally getting around to sending in my pm2 for some lock stick and minor play, though the 3-4 week turnaround from spyderco is quite discouraging. Now I've just got to figure out what I'm going to do with it when I get it back. Sell, keep, or mod? I guess I've got a while to figure it out though.

^^^Your post just reminded me that my PM2 is still with Keyman for the new scales.......

Hmmm, when did I send it again? Early February? If that's the case then it should be done in the next couple weeks

I was actualy thinking about yours when I typed that. What scales are you getting? I've been stuck on that silver shred cf since I saw it on bluesbenders zt. I just love the look of that stuff.

I like the looks of it too, but I can't get over the idea that it's just a bunch of shreds suspended in resin......

Not only is it probably less strong than other CFs, knowing that I would be touching resin when holding it wouldnt give me quite the same giddiness as CF that's carbon fiber through and through, and knowing that thats actually what I'm touching when I hold the knife.......

It's a little hard to explain.......but you kinda understand me, right? :o

I'm just a CF nutjob, completely crazy:D

Anyway, this is the type I'm getting......

I know what you mean, but I would be surprised if that resin was soft enough to damage under normal use.

Oh I doubt it's soft.

But it might be more prone to cracking or chipping because the CF shreds aren't really woven together in any type of strength-promoting structure. They're just kinda floating in a matrix of resin that may or may not be very resistant to chipping or cracking under lateral stress or impact.

Whereas I know for a fact that regular CF is pretty darn tough stuff, and it's becuase of the way it's made.

Guys, it's ALL resin of some sort. Every man made handle material is some type of fibers suspended in some type of resin or epoxy. It's just what used to be broadly referred to as "phenolic", basically.

I would pretty much guarantee you that carbon fiber handle material made of shredded carbon fiber is no less strong than carbon fiber made of stacked up woven sheets. The only difference would be the look.
