The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Speaking of 3" XM's, I'm considering a bowie grind XM 18. Thoughts?

What about the "no knives until Blade" promise?

If you don't mind breaking it, I think a Bowie XM would be pretty damn cool. I'm looking for a spear point myself, but they're all good. The wharnie I handled a while back was surprisingly cool considering I usually hate that type of blade shape.

Probably planning to get out of the knife hobby and participate as a spectator only come June. If everything goes as planned I'll be left with my CQC-9, a blued damascus custom Ultratech, and three special project CQC-7s with reblades in cobalt damascus, Vanax-35, and Spectrumwear.

Beautiful picture of the grand canyon. Want to get back there soon.

I second the "extra curricular activities" comment. Recently turned 21 in a medium sized urban campus. Whew, alcohol is expensive in the city. Cutting into the knife budget, somewhat, just to be social.

Anyway, I had an off topic but knife related incident recently. I was at a meeting of liberty minded individuals, for which I will be the president next year, and everyone just spontaneously everyone pulled out their knives. 3/5 had one. I'd say that's a highly respectable ratio for a college campus.

You may be aware of this, but there is a shop in Smyrna that has some 3" xm18s in stock. All I was seeing were the wharncliffe though.
I saw your picture of the anodized insingo earlier. How's it holding up?

That's one heck of a stable for a spectator! Nice knives man! So when's the sale?

Very cool! Thats definitely not off topic in this thread. If anything my rambling about colleges is off topic:D

Did they have anything good?

Just a heads up Harris, there's a bowie XM in the exchange right now

Thanks. I do plan on buying at BLADE though, through a friend.

It's holding up great, has some new scars. I used to go to Going Gear all the time. Let me know when you want to go.

Will do. I was planning on picking up a 0452 the other day, but I put it off a day. By the time I was ready to get out there they had sold out.

On another note I thought I was about to have to send in my sebenza. Randomly yesterday I started getting a sticky lock. I took it apart and put it back together, but nothing. It actually started sticking a lot worse. It got to the point where I started thinking about which two knives I was going to sell so that I could purchase the micarta insingo while my 21 was in Idaho. Because lets face it, a month without my sebenza is a month of pure hell.
So this morning I decided to disassemble it one last time before I sent it in, but this time cleaning the lock face with rubbing alcohol and switching the hardware around(that last part was just a hail mary). While it doesn't feel 100% yet it is getting better. It no longer sticks, but it does feel ever so slightly "rough" when disengaging the lock.
I'm relieved to say the least.

And on another nother note, I'm finally starting to make some head way on my esee 4. This thing sat around for a couple weeks and ended uprusting pretty bad(hence the half ass satin finish). I got out the angle grinder earlier and finally removed the majority of excess wood, then I did a little rough sanding with some 80 grit. I almost have it down flush in most places, but I pprobably won't touch it again until I get some even lower grit sand paper sometime tomorrow. I tell you what, it felt so good when I started seeing the metal shining from where I was sanding. I didn't think I would ever make it down to the tang at the rate I was going.

This is the last time I touch blackwood with out the adequate tools.

Just put in an order with Dario for a knife of my own.

I'm going with a 3inch blade, 3.5mm blade stock, Elmax at around 61 HRC, CF scales, red liners, and a leather sheath. Same model as my dads.

Gonna be awesome:thumbup:

Cool!

That damn ESEE's been through a lot:D

HAHA yeah I keep dressing him up in a new outfit just to rip it all off and start from scratch. I'm pretty sure once I'm done with the scales and put on a final satin finish I'll be done with THIS knife for good.
Oh yeah then I'll need a leather sheath. Then I'll really be done.

Not bad!

Honestly, I was expecting much worse. The fit and finish is pretty good, lockup is rock solid, very smooth action, and cuts pretty well for how thick the blade is. Plus it's not nearly as big as I expected. That's a good thing.

I'm gonna carry it for a few days and see how it works out.

Don't know where else to put this so this thread is where its going haha.

I have a Strider SnG (new lock-up) that developed up and down play a few months ago. Super bummed. Sat down tonight and out of frustration I took it apart and degreased it and cleaned it throughly. Put it back together and... THE PLAY IS GONE. So happy right now haha

Great!

Mines not developing play yet, and hopefully it never will. But I HAVE noticed that the lock is very sticky when you go to close it after opening it with even a slight bit of authority.....

And it goes deeper and gets stuck farther in the harder you push the blade into cuts. When I was doing some testing on an old 2x4 I pushed it pretty hard and when I went to close it, I almost couldn't get the bar to budge. Scared me for a minute, but I finally popped it out of place and next time I opened it the bar didn't go any farther than it had before.

Still....for a "hard use knife" you'd think.......bah, whatever. Not gonna start another strider bash.

But that's the main difference between striders and CRKs. I've pushed my small sebs through the same type of work, but the locks never once stuck more than a TINY bit. I'm certain it's the tolerences that are the reason behind this. The SNGs got a little more space between the parts, and it shows in these kinds of tests. Still not a bad knife, but just very clearly inferior in the fit and finish department.

I think after I get a good bali again (trading for a Tach 2 tanto) a lefty CRK 21 is next on the list.

Sounds good. IMO every knife nut needs to try one at some point. Not everyone needs to like it, but they at least need to give it a chance.

That's why I bought the strider. And it turns out that I actually DO like it:)
