The New 2014 BladeForums KNIFE Thread!

The response to Stag handles has been very overwhelming

excellent! Stag is possibly my favorite handle material
Personally, I avoid stag that is fatter than the bolsters, here is an example of a stag handle I would not want

The stag is pretty thick

Thanks for the video, I took a screenshot to show the fat stag.

I have heard some definite news from both cutleries!

Canal Street has offered a nice pattern, already in production, in our choice of a one or two blade Knife, in 1095 or 440C!! This could be a chance for a stainless knife, for those who have been pushing for one. A BF tang stamp, and a disc shield with BFC in raised letters is part of the package!!

GEC is offering a new pattern, in 1095, with a BF tang stamp, and a hound's-tooth shield. The drawings are not public-ready yet, so I will wait to show the pics until both are ready! This is to be fair to both, and not my usual teasing!!:o

The real good news is, the offered knives will be comfortably under $100 shipped to you in the USA and Canada.
Offshore shipping will of course have some extra cost!

Wow Great news Charlie!!! We always knew that it was in good hands with you. Can't wait to see the drawings!!

Thank you Charlie! I can't wait too see the drawings.
And thank you for all you do for us!

Charlie, thanks for the update.
Are you planning on submitting the two designs to the forum, and see which one gets more attention? will stag be the only handle material?
Both projects sound great ;)

Awesome news!! As much as I love GEC I really do love my 2 Canal Street knives I own as well and am confident I would be equally happy with what they have to offer. I'm actually carrying a Canal Street made knife today. ;) The copper is starting to take on a patina as well the last few days. Thank you for everything your doing Charlie!! This is going to be the best forum knife yet I can already feel it.

Ha Ha! I descended into the dusty archives, to blow the dust off this thread, only to find Jonanthan's footprints, and several posts ahead of me when I emerged!!

Answers, for Fausto: Yes, we will all vote on the final offers, and yes, the only handle option is stag - unless there is an overwhelming protest, which seems very doubtful!!

For Jon: There may be some fatter stags, as well as thinner stags. We, the oil-stained wretches who are delivering these things are committed to sending the knives-in-boxes out un-opened, to give everyone equal chances at the variances that occur in stag.
I am sure they will all be nice.

I wonder if copper could be an option/upgrade on the Canal version? It looks very cool in my opinion.

I'm also hoping that the CSC will be on their Barlow frame.
As for GEC...we'll see what they come up with. A sowbelly?

Personal taste, but I don't think copper would look any good with stag :p
As for stag being the only option...I'll have to surrender

Thanks for your efforts Charlie. I gotta say that without looking at pictures, I'm leaning toward the stainless one no matter who makes it. I'm not a stainless fanatic but it would be a nice change for this years knife. Stag covers would be just fine - besides, we can't look a gift horse in the mouth.

variances that occur in stag

Variances are one thing, but intentional use of fat stag is a totally different design goal.

Balloon handles are comfortable to use, but are not just a variance in handles, it is purposely done so that ALL the handles are FAT. I am NOT down for FAT stag. And I would venture that people who dont like stag, believe that FAT stag is normal, which imo it is not.

Yes Fat Stag is common on many Wostenholms such as this one, which you can see provides a large swell, even though there is no spine shot to clearly illustrate it

have I left any doubt in your mind about how I feel about intentional use of FAT stag :-)

I am not talking about cherrypicking or opening each box to find the prettiest textured covers. Ive seen Case intentionally advertise and produce FAT stag, but have not noted it in the GEC line. All I am saying is, not to intentionally build fat swell knives with spine profiles like this:

In the currently enlightened state of Stag comprehension on BF, and in the cutleries that I personally respect, I doubt a lot of "Fat Stag" will be in the offing!!
But maybe "Phat Stag"!!
:D:D:D

We get it Jon, you don't like FAT Stag. I don't either, nor do I like stag that is mismatched from one side to the other. I think we're gonna be okay with Charlie running the show. :D

I'm on the Not Fat Stag wagon as well, probably the nicest stag was on my GEC 23 which I still miss dearly

here you can see it stays thin and then swells up out near the end, making it great for handling!

Case, from what I hear and what I've seen, is notorious for thick stag, some folks wish they would take a few lessons about how to scale those up...but then, probably some like it that way, just not me :)

Heres hoping for a Canal Street serpentine jack.

Looking forward to the new pattern GEC proposed as well.
