The New 2014 BladeForums KNIFE Thread!

When you say Amber Stag, are you talking about bone, cut to resemble stag, John?? Or is it "treated" Stag, dyed and impregnated in some way??

Charlie: It is dyed and impregnated all the way thru. It is done by Culpepper. It is real stag. When I make these knives with amber stag scales I grind a bit off the stag to show the amber even if it was a perfect piece of stag. If you do not grind a bit off the dye is very dark. When buffed it is almost glassy. Don't confuse this with stabilized materials. Some natural stag has some amber in it. Now....that...natural amber...is really something.

John

How about a picture of what you're talking about John? Thanks.

Edit: - NEVER MIND John. I was typing as you were posting. I've got it. No need for a pic.

Nowadays it is hard to fit it "Sheffield" style. It simply costs more!
If you are cutting your own stag, and have a vast supply, it is possible, but when you are paying by the piece, it gets real expensive, fast!
Charlie, you mean we don't have quite this much to pick and choose from?

Berkley, whenever I see that photograph I wonder how long that kept hafters in stock, how many individual knives it supplied handles for, and whether there are any remaining knives today made from that stock. It's an evocative photo for me.

I'm eager to see what CSC and GEC propose. Both are excellent companies, and with Charlie in charge and John's generous gift of stag for handles, this could be the best Forum knife we've seen yet!

First time checking in to this thread -very exciting to have Charlie running the show! Looking forward to design proposals. Let's gooooo, Sowbelly! :D

Charlie, do that thing you do...I'm in! Very much like how this is turning around. Thank-you!

Thanks, John. Good Info.

Empire used to dye and finish some of their stag Black. Not as deeply dyed as modern Amber though. Here are a couple:

John, thanks again for your most generous offer.
Charlie, greatly appreciate all the work you're putting into this year's project (along with anyone else working behind the scenes) - and looking forward to the sample pics!

I have one John Lloyd amber stag knife, another on the way, and have accumulated a few of Charlie's SFOs as well. This collaboration is right up my alley, I am watching with anticipation!

I'm relatively new to the forum and just came across this thread today. I'm in! I'm not sure how you get your name on an official list, but I'd like to get in on this. John, thanks for the generous donation of the Stag.

I'm pretty new to this subforum as well and excited to see the designs, could anyone shine some light on how these knives are distributed? Is it restricted in any way or hard to get ? Maybe I missed the info somewhere, so sorry if I did and thanks for any help.

If you look at the middle Empire knife and at the upper corner near the bolster you will see a bit of amber. This is the color I am talking about. If a bit more was ground off I bet there was a lot of amber on that scale.

GEC #66 Jack I bought a few years ago with stag handles - nicely knarled and colored, but not fat - quite comfortable actually. I think they did a good job of matching the two scales front & back. OH

Old Hunter: That stag has been torched or flamed for that amber color. The dark areas in the fissures is potassium permanganate used by the Indians for critter control before export. PP is a deep violet when sprayed on wet and then dries to a deep brown. This is the color most assume natural stag is. Natural stag is quite blond after cleaned of dirt, sand, rocks and velvet not yet dropped off just as we see on moose for example. When stag has been cleaned it is then dipped in PP again and, at times, sent out for amber dying. Many people also dye their stag almost black and grind off high spots leaving black in the fissures and light natural stag on the highs. Everyone does it differently....some just great...and some just miserable. India does not export any stag any more. They have a green revolution going on just as we do. People think that farmers kill Sambar for their antlers. Ridiculous....they shed them every year. Farmers, at times, burn their fields to find the sheds. This is what the gov. does not want. They removed all laws on the books allowing collection and distribution of stag. It is not going to be distributed again unless all laws are reinstated. Not likely.

Thanks for the latest update; something from GEC and CSC will be the choices. I'm comfortable with either.

Thanks for that John-most informative.
I have found shed antlers round here from the feral Rusa -a Sambar relative. They are always white and worn smooth and look more like what I see on my Elk handled GECs.
The antlers that were still in use by the stag when it met its end have the more gnarly popcorned appearance. I also had some antler that was still velvety and the tines were blunt -not fully formed .It had deep channels, was a bit spongy and didn't look too good. I guess it depends on what point in the season the antler is harvested along with the diet and lifestyle of the particular stag on how worn ,broken and large the antlers will be.
cheers

I imagine it will go a bit like this:

Charlie will provide the designs from both potential makers and then a poll will decide on the winning design.

At that point instructions will be given about how to order, probably a prepay palpal thread (which is what happened last year) will be posted with a set time frame eg orders to be in by **\**\** date.

After that they get made and sent to the recipients. Overseas members like myself will incur a natural shipping fee.

> does this sound about right Charlie?

A great process to be a part of, I'm looking forward to it.
