The official Challenge knife thread!Makers please confirm your entry

tyrone that is an awesome piece right there bro, but completely unfair in the same breath..... If I'd only not procrastinated, had so much on my plate, more time, lived closer..... then..........

my knife would have ended up at least 10% as good as that :D

you guys are killing me here, keep 'em coming...

Well that's just nonsense talk there. After I posted pics of mine, I looked at them and picked out about 6 flaws that I have to fix. Just looking at the pics puts it in a different perspective. Wow, I got work to do.

Leather or kydex pants?

Leather. My third sheath ever, not pleased with it at all. My holes drilled through crooked from the front so the stitching on the back looks horrible.

All in all there are several problems with this knife that made me not want to ship it today. I had a couple of people look it over, one of whom is probably going be to JS after Blade Show this year. I'm really just looking forward to getting feedback from everyone. Maybe someone will find some issues I wasn't aware of that will help me get to the next level. This is me kind of testing the waters to see if maybe I can start selling some knives.

Check out this video of the knife slicing cleanly through NEWSPRINT. Cutting a piece of paper is pretty easy if you get a proper cut but newsprint takes some great edge geometry and killer sharpness.

Well, I guess later is better than nothing at all. Someone on here has a signature line that says 'if it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would get done'! That seems to be my motto here lately. I had a bunch of stuff come up and didn't get to work on this knife like I wanted. I actually made 4 knives, two from 01 and two from 52100. This is the first knife I made from 52100 and I'm pleased with the edge it has but I wanted more time to experiment with my heat treating. I made two from Aldo's steel. Both were normalized and heat treated the same except for the final austenizing temp. Afterwards, I put both to the cutting test and this one did a little better. I can't wait to play with this steel a lot more!

Here's the specs. Aldo's 3/32nd 52100, 5 3/8" blade, tip to front of scales. Flats gun blued until they turned black. Scales are some of my homemade burlap Coffee Bag mykarta. I wanted to try and do as much myself as I could. This piece of burlap scales had the logo in it and if you look closely along the spine, you can see some orange and yellow fibers. The green in the scales is also part of the logo.

The pins are natural micarta pins with a brass thong tube. I also made the sheath from 7-8 oz Hermann Oak leather. I'll get this sent out today express mail.

While it didn't turn out like I'd hoped, I think it will make a good camp slicer. I look forward to the feedback from everyone at the gathering. As I see it, this is going to be invaluable to a new maker such as myself.

In at the last minute. Honestly didn't think I was going to finish in time.

5/32" - CPM D2 - 60-61 HRC + Cryo

OAL: 10.5"

Blade: 5.5" - shallow convex "scandi" grind w/ micro-bevel

Handle: Green canvas Micarta - black and blue G10 liners - SS pins and tube

Sheath: 7/8oz leather - hand stitched/tooled - fixed belt loop

I was gonna do a convex ! BET THAT THING WILL SLICE LIKE NO OTHER MAN! NICE

I hate to say but I am going to be unable to attend. First reason is that we have been unable to round up a grandparent that wants to keep our three kids for the weekend. The other is that with Blade Show fastly approaching I can not afford a three day vacation from the shop. Moose already has my knife so it will still be in the challenge.
I was really excited to come down and meet everyone. Hopefully in the fall I will not be too busy and will be able to get away for a bit.

That sucks Chris, I was looking forward to meeting you. If anything changes for you I will be coming through your town about 5 in the morning friday. Theres a empty seat that your welcome to fill.

Man, some exciting blades indeed.

There are a few that will be getting calls from me about the knives they sent.

Hopefully followed shortly by some financial transactions.

Dave, I'm gonna go pick up you entry today at the PO. They tend to deliver when I'm asleep, but no worries, it made it fine.

And I wanna keep it......

:D

At Ethan's, Bruce your knife has landed , same with Battle Creek's. Todd, you know you've got a few here even if the official entry isn't in yet.

I'll be leaving out in a couple of hours, if the mail don't run before then, not sure if your knife will make in the competiton.

It has begun..........

Did mine make it? Tracking said they delivered it Wed., but I know they don't always get it right.

Some fantastic talent in this thread. I'm really looking forward to the testing pics!

Well guys, I was completely in over my head on this and was just not able to get my knife finished in time. I made it anyway, here's a picture for proof! I think thats about knife number 25 for me, maybe I'll be better prepared the next time a challenge rolls around.

I'm with you bkduckworth. I just couldn't finish in time but here is my proof of getting one done. At least this one already has a nice home to go to.
