The official Challenge knife thread!Makers please confirm your entry

What type of failures could have occurred. I thought that this was supposed to be a "slicing" challenge?
Please update as I am concerned as I ground my knife very thin and did not anticipate Bushcrafty chores.

Well......

3 knives suffered catastrophic failure....the judging is complete.......numbers will be tallied and the post will be made probably wednesday.

I do hope that is agreeable......I might the bulk of it tomorrow, but I doubt it will be completed in a single sitting.

Thanks bro for putting this on!! Who got my knife or was it one of the catastrophic failures?

Big Chris, they stated early on there would be bushcraft/camp chores... so food prep/slicing would merely play a small part here.. I think we all are a little concerned and rightfully so, the Beckerheads get down and dirty :)

It is what it is, I really have to say that I appreciate every maker that participated, it takes a lot to throw your work out in the open for critique both good and bad, I for one am glad I did, regardless the outcome..

Much Respect goes out to all those that suffered the cold wet stuff and got muddy instead of dirty testing out our entries, not only a daunting task with as many knives as there were but keeping everything as orderly as possible...

Thanks guys,

Thanks guys,

Well said! I like the challenges because it gives me good feedback on what I can improve and also shows me how far away I am from the great makers! Im still relatively new so other peoples opinions really help me.

I believe this to be the actual description from the first page. "The knife will need to be a bushcraft/camp knife, 4.5" to 5.5" blade geared towards slicing. It will be used for food prep, bushcraft tasks, etc. everything else is open to the maker."

I designed and built mine around the "geared toward slicing" part, thinking this would be the main theme. I believe there was quite a bit of talk about food prep in the other thread, but like Rob said, it is what it is. I'm dying to see the results!

So I did get confirmation that mine was one that chipped badly. That is how the cookie crumbles. Obviously my knife was not made for the tasks asked of it. That is now my problem. I read and remember the post about bushcrafting. The thing is there was alot more discussion about there previously being a bushcraft knife challenge and a camp knife challenge, and others wanting to see something that is more of a cutting/slicing tool. I really thought that this is what the challenges would be. I ground my knife to sub .010" behind the edge and hardened to 64 Rc. These two combined were obviously my downfall. Congrats to all those that survived the testing. Now I am ready to see the final results.

Don't feel bad bro. That's the way I understood the challenge as well and figured there would be more slicing than whackin. I left mine hard knowing it wouldn't take much lateral force or impacts. It's all good though. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the results and some pics. Sounds like they had a blast there!

Damn I hope mine survived...:(. Did Rick(Marchand) enter his knife. He posted pics of one earlier in this thread but I did not see it in that table photo.

Everyone please chill for a bit,Give them time to go through the process,I know everyone wants to see pics, see results,And have alot of questions. These guys took time outta there days to do there job of testing like we had are job of making the knives. We all had alot of time to make knives.Give them some time to do a proper score. For alot of you this is the first challenge u have entered. That makes you really antsy.I been there. It kills to have to set and wait. But there will be many more to come.So lets ease up a tad,Let them do there job now.We will want them to do more in the future for us. :D If we really wanted to know we woulda attended

Yeah.... I did enter one but didn't see it on the table... I wonder if it was one that failed. That would suck... never had a failure before. Probably have it coming.:p

It is okay to fail(It helps to keep saying that to yourself, Ha!).

My inside man just confirmed that my knife chipped out beyond sharpening. I WAS SET UP, I TELL YA.... SET UP! :p

I'm actually kinda surprised I can make a knife with a fine/hard enough edge to chip! Kitchen knives, here I come! I brought this knife down to a zero grind before putting a final convex edge on it. But I did test and inspect the entire edge with a jeweler's loupe before sending it out, so no excuses. I wonder just how bad it ended up and whether it at least sliced well enough. Damn, it looked good though!

Rick

Personally, I think that about 5 years ago, someone dropped a sliver of tungsten steel in the jungle... and by chance, it was picked up by a growing bamboo sprout... and by chance, that bamboo found it's way into the challenge and by chance, my knife happened to be in the right place at the right time...... What incredible LUCK!
