Tomas - That beech forest reminds me of the time I spent in Germany....

These two were taken on the Middle Fork Kings River, between Tehipite Valley and Simpson Meadow, Kings Canyon NP

Looks like she caught an eel. Yuck! They are really messy to take off if you don't have a burlap sack to grab them with.

For sure, then there's the eel slime drying on your forearm if you don't pinch the tail up to the head. Actually, the intention was to catch eels. She had never done any fishing of any description. The previous day I took her down to where some beach-bashers roam and that gave a little momentum [I may well post a pic of that later]. The aim of this game was to bag whatever is edible with my compact kit [fits in an old tredder puncture repair tin]. Eels are by far the easiest thing snag in a survival situation, so I got her up and running with handlines and multiple traces. Even though it's easy, 'cos she did it herself, and caught on the first go, she is super keen for many more goes of all sorts of fishing. It works out great; I'm moving away from fishing bores and she is moving towards it. They'll be a good midpoint I suspect.

Apologies to all for being so off topic. In mitigation it kinda relates to my last post. I won't make a habit of it.

Here are two pictures of my campsite at Hamilton Lake, Sequoia NP, this week. One looking in each direction. It was a pretty nice spot to spend a few days.

We hiked the Towpath trail along the old Erie Canal yesterday. The view is the old abandoned Electric Railroad Bridge over the Maumee River. The large rock in the center is "Roche de Bouef" Rock of the Ox or we like to call it "Buffalo Rock". It was named by the French in the late 1700's when they traded furs in the area. It is one of the most beautiful views along the eight mile long trail.
