The "Whatever" Thread

Good idea. I am going to try to find a fluorescent orange windbreaker.

Fit is good, maybe a little big. The sleeves come unhemmed, so they can be made perfect. It is a little long, but I would rather have it long than short. I got an extra heavy weight zipper jacket in Timber Ghost. I think my expectation of weight had something to do with the fact that I have read a lot stuff about wool in general being heavy and bulky. I have not worn it with a long sleeve shirt underneath, but it doesn't bother me with a short sleeve t shirt under it. It took just a couple minutes for me to get used to the feeling of wool on my skin.

Hey Cooper...what size did you get? i'm a big guy, and i typically go for 3XL if i can, cuz i like the room. but, you mentioned it was a bit big, so curious what size you got. thanks.

Lol, Looks like Mr. Fred Asbell is getting some good orders from the JK crowd!

I plan on ordering something myself in a few weeks. I like the Pathfinder Pullovers

i never heard of them. so, thanks to all y'all for posting. i am all about the wool, but it's hard to find any reasonably priced. GFA seems like a good deal to me.

I got a 2x, and haven't gotten any smaller since the last time you saw me.:D

What do you think of the Timber Ghost color?

I dig it. Pattern, colors and shape are subdued enough that I think it would actually do a good job of breaking up my profile in the woods. Keep in mind, my wardrobe consists mostly of carpenter jeans and pocket t shirts, so I am not exactly an expert on fashion.:D

I got that G Fred Asbell jacket in last weekend. Extremely fast shipping. Wore it some over the last few days and I like it a lot.

Although it isn't as heavy as I was anticipating, it was been comfortable (after I got used to the initial itchiness of the wool). As a test, I put on a Columbia fleece jacket under the wool and went for a windy and chilly (about 40F) ride on the four wheeler. I was extremely impressed with how warm I stayed. Going to add another layer or two and try it out next week during deer season.

Congrats! I bought my oldest son an Asbell wool mackinaw last year and bought myself a poncho. Great products! I think their prices are pretty good too, especially being wool made in the USA.

that's not all bad -- "carpenter pant brown" is one of the most effective camouflage colors out there.
It blends in just about everywhere because it's a mid-range color, not too light, not too dark...

Just found out no Thanksgiving for us this year. Becky was going to host it this time but Angie works until 3, Connie starts work at 5, and Alison starts at 2, so we will try to have it some other day.

We are still going to have a Thanksgiving, but not on Thursday. Since Maggie left Sams and went to Walmart, she now has to work on Thanksgiving day.....Sams is closed on that day.

Sounds familiar. Angie works at K Mart, Connie at Target, and Alison is a police officer. We are hoping to coordinate for Saturday or Sunday.

I know how it is, my wife has to work on Thanksgiving, 12 hour shift and another 12 hour shift for Black Friday. It seems like more and more businesses are open on Thanksgiving every year.

Am I the only one that uses the cutting edge of my knife when sparking a fire steel?

I note that many people create special notches in knife designs that are used for striking a fire steel -

In the above design, if I wanted that notch for a fire steel, I would ask that it be sharpened to allow a better strike- I also note that sharp-edged spines work better for striking, and that is a very obtuse edge - so if that little notch were sharpened it would be better for striking the steel, and also for cutting rope etc.

Maybe it really is just me lol -

The edges of the cutout (and spine) will be sharp. The customer requested a notch, so he is getting a notch. But what do I know, i use a Bic!

Let's see someone light a cig with that notch lol...

I am not knocking notches - or sharp-edged spines - but I have much better luck doing my sparking with the sharpened edge -

And - I probably did not make myself clear - I would want the notch to have a cutting edge in the interior edge - that would be useful - maybe on my next knife.....

We are up to almost a Inch of snow on the ground lol. Luckly the last of my 1200 bulbs of garlic went into the ground yesterday. 4 cords of wood that have been sitting were split and stacked. Burned a few pieces last night and it's good and dry. Still have about another 4 cords that need split and stacked but I have enough put up for this winter. Still need to transfer about a cord up to the covered front porch but I'm done for now lol. My 12 days of vacation has been spent working and that makes no sense lol.

As far as the striking of the firesteel I never use my edge. It dulls it very quickly imo. I always use the squared spine or what I usually do is have old hacksaw blades or a specific striker attached to the sheath under a piece of bike tire tube. These new fangled strikers work very well and weight nothing. If I don't have that I always make sure my spines are squared and it works great. Never had a need to use the edge.
