The "Whatever" Thread

I've been noticing several other makers knives getting attention in forums like General and Traditional, might help keep this forum open if some of mine were posted around different areas on BF.

I think the main issue right now is the election. EVeryone I know who loves knives also likes guns. With the ban talk that hilary does and has attempted has most folks stocking up on things they are worried they won't be able to get in the future. KNife makers all over the web have been talking about sales being way down

I pretty much agree with that too. The problem is that last spring and summer were both bad too. In January my forum is up for renewal. With postings (this forum used to be a lot more active) and sales down I'm not sure what to do.

I say do not lose hope and keep your chin up for next year. I may be stepping on some toes, but I think you should close the books to taking more custom orders, at least for awhile, and try just making a few at a time or experiment with new designs or construction techniques and place them up for sale here on the forums. Even the idea of the premium line with a limited run would get people's attention. In this way, you reduce the damage from customers not paying for an order and you have some control over costs by only ordering the materials for the projects you want to complete. Just my two cents.

I also liked that EDC Commando model, your interpretation of the Ek Commando knives. Some of my favorites.

I voted today. Got to the polls 45 mins before they opened, still around 50 people in front of me. By 7am when they opened, the line was completely around the building and circled back around past me!

John, your knives are amazing and priced to sell, that much is clear. The custom design option is great, but that relies on someone coming to you to place an order. When you go fishing, do you wait for the fish to come to where you drop your bait, or do you go to where the fish are hungry? It seems to me that more people will impulse-buy a knife than will seek someone out for an order, unless they are an established customer. Your established customers already know how great your knives are, but their (our) money only goes so far. You have to tap the impulse-buy market, I believe that will lead to more return sales. I know it is a risk to pre-make a knife that may not sell, so you would have to make knives that are a popular or signature pattern(easy to sell). What we may like in the JK forum may be different than what others want.

I know you have been brain-storming ways to grow the business. The quality and affordability of the product is already there, now it's just marketing. I'm sure we can do our part to get the word out on your knives, if we aren't already.

My plan is to make more knives available for immediate delivery in 2017, probably with simple micarta handles. I will say this, I'm making a design for mqqn that I believe will be very popular!

Where do you get it? The stuff the guy sent me was from a well known person who makes it, it was so gummy it kept clogging up the saw and really stunk. I have not seen it at any of my suppliers.

The guys over at Shadetree Custom are the best, IMO. They have many different color options, and I think they will do custom setups also. You can also buy precut scales on ebay

That's who the guy who sent it to me got it from. It seemed like it wasn't fully cured.

I haven't really heard anything bad about the product, from customers or makers. Weird...

Veteran's day hike with my dog and favorite JK. My thanks to all those who have or currently serve.
