Random question for the hunters, what bow do you use? I haven't bow hunted since I was a teenager and I wasn't good at it then... I didn't sit well. I'm not much better now but I'm much better at taking naps at least :D. In honesty, I don't know if I'll hunt medium/large game with it (white tail) or just use it for target shooting and taking out a rabbit or squirrel in the suburban paradise (no home proximity laws in MI for bows if you have written permission from owner). Bows are also silent so I figure I won't upset the sub-division board (never again will I live in an HOA area...).

So, what do you have, what do you like, what do you wish you had? Right now, I'm mostly looking at a Samik sage takedown recurve as they're inexpensive but seem to be well liked. I'm having trouble finding one locally but may have to just order online. Probably a 40lb or 45lb draw weight, I don't think I need anything too strong. Even if I take it hunting larger game, you can't see more than 20 yards in most the the swampy areas where I now live.

P.S. I was thinking the last 2 days that the designs I have with John right now would make fantastic small game processing knives :). I'm very excited about that.

45# is the minimum for whitetail here in Ks.
I used to have a lot of fun target shooting with a 35# recurve -- less wear and tear on the shoulder.
The Samick Sage changed it's name a year or so back, but they're good quality for the price.

this year I bought a compound crossbow for deer hunting (they changes the rules here about 3 years ago) and so far it's either been too hot or raining on the weekends.

When I bow hunted, back in the 90’s and early 2000’s I used a Browning compound bow. It was good quality but I have no idea what’s good now. I’ve honestly been thinking about getting back into archery, recreational shooting to start, perhaps some hunting down the road. I shot almost daily back then and got to be a pretty good shot.

I’m glad you mentioned the 45# requirements here in Ks. I didn’t know that.

Any idea what they changed it to? Might explain why I can't find it. There's a Cabela's about 45-50 min from my house so I thought about heading there and getting something as they have a few models that look like the same thing.

hmmm......
Looks like they took draw weight out of the regs - now it just says this: "Ethical hunters select equipment most effective for their capabilities, the game they hunt and the style of hunting they prefer. Hunters should consider muzzle velocity, kinetic energy, bullet type, recoil and accuracy when selecting equipment that is adequate for the game hunted"
I wonder if they did that when they made crossbows legal for everyone.
the only specification I can find is that you have to hunt with a broadhead that won't fit through a 3/4" ring.

Samick changed their name to Galaxy - you can find the Sage under both names online.
Cabela's sells PSE takedowns and house brand - either of those should be comparable to Samick at the price range.

.

this law in Illinois would have idiots hunting with bazookas

Hmm, does a bazooka kill, clean, and cook the animals all in one shell?

When I was in high school I saved half my lunch money every day and eventually had enough to buy a Bear Whitetail Hunter compound bow (this was in 1984). I used that bow extensively and I still have it, although I stopped shooting it regularly about 7-8 years ago.

I was in Cabelas after they were bought out by BPS and just happened to wander into the archery department. Long story short, I walked out with a heavily marked down Cabelas branded compound, which was actually made by Bear. At right around $300 for the bow and accessories it was a great deal. Also, I am left eye dominant but have always shot everything right handed. The salesman convinced me to buy a left handed bow and it was a great move for me. It took a little getting used to but I’m glad I made the switch.
