The "Whatever" Thread

pictures from our trip last week

A few years back my appendix tried to kill me near there. I had quite a time recuperating from the surgery but did get to wander around a little. Beautiful area.

Thinking really hard about not taking orders anymore, getting tired of having knives ready to ship, then not hearing back when I email for payment. I may be having two for sale soon. Maybe I should change the policy for new customers, payment must be made in full when I start their order?

Do what you have to do. Even if you don't require full payment up front, insisting on a deposit to cover the cost of materials seems completely reasonable. Especially for new customers.

Hopefully they just stepped away from the computer for a few days and will be back soon.

Here are your policy changes that I could easily find over the past couple of years

I think all you have to do is start following your own policy!

Nobody is going to balk at paying a deposit for the materials when you start on the knife - NOBODY.

If you then don't hear back, you just had someone donate materials for you to make a knife and you can sell it to cover your labor.

On customs you have already stated that you want full payment when you start on the knife - no problem there - you might not be able to sell some knumbskull design (think scanduckie here) so you should get full payment up front.

It's going to save you a lot of grief if you just go ahead and enforce your policies.

You know we all love you - and I believe you should start sticking to your guns on that issue -

You don't need that kind of frustration in your life -

sorry to hear this John. that sucks.

i don't want to be the debbie downer here, but i have read more than once on these forums (feedback threads, i think) NEVER to pay a custom maker for a knife up front. it would seem that some bad apples may have ruined the bushel.

that doesn't help your situation. and, paying up front certainly wouldn't bother me. i just wanted to bring it to your attention. i don't want a new policy scaring away potential customers (real customers).

maybe just sending a confirmation email prior to beginning an order would be an easier answer (though not perfect). and, maybe you already do this...can't remember. and, if you did do this for these deadbeat buyers, and they confirmed, then shame on them.

I like the idea of paying for the materials before the knife is started.

John has to buy the materials - he does not keep a lot on hand in terms of material inventory.

When someone orders, they should be willing to pay for the materials, and then John get's his value added when he completes the knife.

This would be completely legitimate - fair too! I have been surprised that you have not insisted for my money up front when I ordered for the 1st time. I paid in advance anyway because that is what I would want (and what I expect from my woodworking clients). At the very least you should send out an e-mail "time to pay" invoice/notice 2 weeks before a knife hits the bench, certainly for customers with no track record with you. If they are offended - too bad. You aren't making knives as a public service.

Admittedly situations can change with folks from the time they excitedly (and in good faith) order a new knife and the passing of a month or two when it's pay up time - a new reality can set in. No prob, but you shouldn't bear the brunt. Simple as that.

Yup. no argument here. seems reasonable to me. i just wanted to mention that folks (i.e. mods) on this forum say not to pay up front.

I agree with everyone.:D

It would not offend me in the least if you made this an across the board rule.

I didn't want to clutter up John's awesome giveaway thread with a question, but can someone tell me more about the knife kyturkey posted?

It's the bird and trout that made me interested in the 3/4" tall stock the TK's made from, fine looking knife!

I have five pocket knives ready, two with scales on waiting for sanding but it's raining and I can't take pictures :(
