Thoughts on WSK Knives ?

I've made a coule stripped down versions. I have a Beck so I deleted what I didn't like that made it seem clunky to me. 3/16" stock, no hook to get in way of chopping and a high flat grind.

Brian those things are so hot they are smoking buddy, but in all honesty I wouldn't call them WSK's. Once you take away the things which some people hate such as the Sawback/notchback, half rounder and the different height grinds then the knife just becomes a knife albeit in your case some very cool knives !

Glad to see David making knive again :)
I'm hanging onto my Beck :) my first custom knife.

Hey Thanks TF!! I'll have 4 or 5 at Atlanta Blade Show in June :)

Thanks Scott, those he makes are awesome but very out of my budget.....maybe my Lotto supermax might come up !!!

The Saw back on his looks like it would work really well~

way out of my budget :>

i had a chance to buy one for $800 used, with pedigree, and passed, because i needed to pay my rent and buy food. dumb perhaps, but well...

then i found that Koster for "not much money" :)

i LIKE the Koster a lot.

My Tracker looked like this when I first got it and was like cutting with a club.
Then Bryan said that he would tackle the Job of sharping it. What a job. he had a
man's job ahead of him. Then when it came back .It was like a new knife . Thanks Bryan.

I remember asking Pitdog how he liked his.Because I had found this one and wanted to know how
his was working out for him. He said to to get one. That I would like it. He was right. Thanks Pitdog.

Any way you can love it or hate it . I just think it's a lot of FUN to play with .

Hi all,

Hey Jeff, thanks for the kind words on getting your Tracker to do what aknife should and that is cut, not scrape or be to toothy that is just a little better than a scraper lol. Both trackers that came to me to have them sharpened were were a little sharper then scrapers. they just need to to be thinned in the edge a little. It takes about 5 minutes.

I still like un and will continue to make mine up. but i want the staggard tooth design like the Beck has.

I am still working on it Pitdog:D.

Bryan

Yea I thought the 6" blade length was to short also on them. My first one is going to have a longer blade. I have handled 2 of the tops big ones and when they came to me to be sharpened up I was like these are scrapers not cutting tools, They are now though lol. The edges just need to be thinned a little to make them like razors.
That was neat video of the fellow making the spoon with the little WSK.

Again it comes down to what ( you ) like. some like the WSK design and some do not.

Bryan

Here is a WSK design with a longer blade, the saw placement is also in a spot that makes more sense to me !

Great pics Jeff, I love the height of the grind on the portion nearest the handle !

I am going to be honest here. Nearly 90% of the the tools that Pitdog carries look ridiculous to me. They have silly names - and frankly I don't get them. Booshway? It sounds like a Pokemon' character or a super hero.

However, that fool gets more dirt time than I do - and loves to use his steel. I would trust him to get me a fire going and get a shelter made - so frankly I don't give a shit if he uses a crowbar to do it. He has fun - he makes designs that work for him - and he seems to be a great guy (hell - his dogs love him - he can't be all bad).

That is the same as how I feel about the WSK. Not for me. Too heavy - to thick - to gimmicky. But that is me.

When I am in the south - I carry two blades - one 4 inch Convex (Arete or Kephart) and a SAK. If I am in the North - I carry two blades - A Scandi (Arete or AS Woodlore) and a SAK. That is what I like to carry.

I get a bang out of seeing what Rick Marchand carries - his shit looks like a Samari sword and Jute twine had sex - but I know THAT fool get a lot of dirt time (or snow time) and I would trust him to get me shelter - fire - and food.... and download me some porn....

This comes down to what you are comfortable with and opinion.

Who wants a beer?

TF

I agree with you TF--those 2(Pitdog and Rick)could do all that and more

Excellent reply as well

Personally, I think the one do-all tool fantasies are kind of stupid. But that's just me.

How many mechanics do you see that carry only a crescent wrench?

How many mechanics can fix a car with nothing but their wits?
How many here could make it back home with nothing but their wits?
Kind of puts your analogy in perspective huh?
The WSK is not a fashion choice for all, for some it makes sense...I see many posts about how "ugly" the knife is, for me, I never saw the knife and thought, "man, what a super HOT knife". What I saw was one choice from many, for a survival knife, a do it all knife...
The " ONE KNIFE" concept is not stupid. Even if YOU think it is. The ONE knife concept is a viable option for many, like myself. I don't need my knife to wipe my ass, I need it to cut stuff...sometimes to chop stuff...but mostly to cut stuff. If I want to carry one tool to handle a few basic tasks, then so be it. I have never needed to stay in the woods, I choose to, whenever I am there. The world is to damn crowded IMO to claim otherwise.
Each and every one of us, can choose what tool is best for us. Calling a knife design stupid seems a bit silly to me. The basic concept of the "knife" was worked out ages ago. What we collectors and users do, is go out and have fun with all kinds of "stupid" ideas of what that original (whatever that is) idea was.
I am not sure what the big drama is with the WSK, but I guess it has to do with a movie and an ass hat (TBJ)...the design IMO is a solid idea. TOPS messed it up good...Martin knives made a decent option, now they are making a hollow handled abortion of the original...Pssh!
I could also love the original WSK design because I am a tool guy...and while not every new tool that is supposed to do it all actually DOES, its still fun to try them out and see what you can make happen with them.
Anyway...I guess PIT new I would chime in sooner or later. :)

These are both Becks. They are simply ground differently. The bottom left was ground flat and the top ones where ground edge up...anyways..I prefer the bottom left, as it gives a nice smooth "hook" area, while the other gives a noted "notch" where the maker (in this case Beck) ground the draw knife and chopper sections. I modified a TOPS to look like the bottom left knife some years ago...it was sold to someone here on the forums, damned it I can remember who??? Anyways....Trackers rule..
peace out.

EDIT: man...I was trying to put up the "movie photo" of the trackers...with the 2 different grinds....I suck.

David Beck told me that those ones with the higher grind and that's"notch" are because those are actually hollow ground in the draw knife area and flat ground on the chopping edge portion. The ones with the lower draw knife bevel are all flat ground. Tim Horran will know if he grinds edge up on both. I would assume so from my conversations with him but I could be wrong.

Yes Sir,
I believe they are both "hollow ground", at least the ones I have held. What I meant was the position of the knife on the platen, or against a wheel. To make the nice smooth "hook" you hold the knife almost parallel with the belt and wheel, it allows you to grind without the deep gouge in the hook area.
I used a 4"X36" horizontal bench sander and held the knife at about a 30 degree angle, and against the wheel (2 inches about)(IIRC) and it gave me a nice looking hook area, much like the Beck we are looking at. When holding the knife edge up, you can't get that large smooth and round hook.
