Traditional Knives & Slingshots

I remember the good old days when you’d scour the driveway looking for the roundest or squarest rocks. Something halfway balanced. They always curved when they got out there a bit, just a matter of how much. Finding a sack of marbles was awesome, and steel shot was like gold.

Y’all ever read Hell, I was there, by Elmer Keith? He recalls when he was a kid, a big black feller started chasing him and he had a slingshot and had some round balls in his pocket. He put a couple balls in his mouth, loaded the slingshot, stopped and fired at the guy. Said the ball got him in the mouth and broke out his teeth, and had probably done considerable other damage too.

I thought that was a right interesting story that this thread brought to my recollection.

What a great idea for a thread! Unfortunately my slingshot is long gone but I am enjoying the pictures and memories:)

You were definitely first in my thoughts Mike :)
Thanks Jack. This thread was the first I saw this morning. Jumped right out of the list and made me smile ;)

I still haven't used a Pickle Fork Mike, I'd be interested to know what your thoughts on them are :)
Definitely need to be more mindful when shooting them, but man are they fun! If you shoot your keychain Wasp, you've probably got the basics down. Just know that shooting pickle forks, eventually you'll forget to do one thing right and will end up hitting your hand - Probably more than once! 🤬

My walk-around and hiking frame is usually this little guy I made (and clay ammo)

Another fun little Pickle Fork ;)

I keep meaning to try putting bands my keychain frame and give 'er a try, but there sure isn't much to hold onto!

More great slingshots Mike, are you making them?
I dabble :)

Think we have room for one more photo. Includes two gifts from two fine friends in the UK. A Big 'Un Lambsfoot in ebony, and a nicely hand carved frame (believe it's Ash, but could be Yew)

Very cool thread. Had my slingshot for about an hour when I was 12. Turns out shooting your brother was frowned upon. My dad was mad but was snickering a little. My mom is a fiery korean lady and immediately trashed it. At the end of the day my brother got hit with a rock and my dad was in the doghouse for laughing a little.

I thought I had gotten away with it with little repercussions. Come saturday my dad dropped me off at our church to help the pastor and a few members pick up trash on a long portion of highway that they had sponsored. When I got home my mom was mad that my dad didn't help with the trash pickup. Hahahaha great memories.

We bring this up at least once a year when we are together.

You can still get big rock-slinging bands (square tubes), but they're hard work! :D

Modern bands and tubes are too easily nicked though. Round ammunition is a lot more accurate too! :D I use plastic balls in the house, with a catch-box, and either steel balls or clay balls outdoors, both are inexpensive, and the clay balls are very safe, and just turn back into mud

That's what I've heard! :D My keychain Wasp is fun, but it's tricky to shoot accurately (I take the largest size glove) ;) Perhaps surprisingly, I hadn't hit my hand until a few weeks ago, when I managed to hit the back of my knuckle with a 14mm steel! I'm still amazed I didn't break it!

That's really cool Mike, I mainly use clay balls too :)

Give it a try Mike, I've had fun with mine in the market, usually fire chickpeas! :D Your Mini Scout has a few angles to the frame too :)

I have this folding one. It has a small frame, but shoots OK :)

LOL! :D Good for you, that's really cool  Well done :)

Thanks for sharing. I beamed my cousin with one once, but not full power. I got a scolding but little else thankfully. I was afeared though...

Anyone here shoot bbs? In one of the videos I watched there was mention made of using Chinese tubing for bb shooting slingshots. Hmmm sounds like cheap ammo.

Mot me, but I think more and more shooters are using lighter ammo like that, which means lighter bands/tubes, and probably better accuracy. No need to go heavy when you're only shooting paper targets
