Traditional knives, traditional storage

BTW Gary, the smaller boxes are inexpensive. Two boxes and two sheets of foam cost me $14.75.
That sounds pretty good, Alan. Counting knives, I'm guessing the small boxes are about 8" x 8" x 1.5"?

Found this box in the dumpster lol. Little oil on the hinges and it works fine. It'll do for now.
Nice tool box for your knives, MH!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
My brother went through some kind of 2-year auto mechanics degree program back in the 1970s, and got a job at GM's Tech Center, where he worked for close to 40 years. When he finished school, he invested a lot of money into tools and a big rolling tool chest, but then GM provided all that stuff at his work site. I sometimes think about how nice one of those 6-drawer chests might be for my knives and "accessories"! ;) I should look into what's available in the used tool chest market.

I store mine in these cases I made out of some left over Cypress flooring.

5K Qs 5K Qs thanks GT, my current collection has already filled this one almost completely lol. I'll probably pick up a tool chest with drawers eventually. This would be nice s-l400.jpg lol, my Dad was a mechanic by profession for about 40 years as well, he has this exact chest. He got an exceptional deal, he bought a mobile shop ( converted bread truck) with tools and this box and a smaller one for less than what just this box alone goes for. ( 5,000-7,500 used:eek: )Lowes actually has some nice chests smaller and much less expensive, that'd be great for knife storage:thumbsup:

Oops! I thought I posted this much earlier today, but apparently I never pushed the "Post Reply" button.

That would be a fantastic chest, David!!:cool::cool::thumbsup: Much bigger than what I had in mind (and apparently about 100 times as expensive as my budget ). It would be kind of nice to have my knives AND my other tools (a much smaller collection ;)) all stored in the same place, though!

5K Qs 5K Qs , lol its way outta my budget as well, Gary. My Dad came into one of those "once in a lifetime" deals, a friend of his had married a lady who's mechanic husband had passed away. The truck and tools were sitting unused and going to ruin, they offered it to my Dad and he bought it. A truck, that large chest, a smaller one, air tools and compressor, chests were full of mechanic tools, diagnostic equipment and manuals, for less than the price of that chest would be used. He eventually converted the truck into a bunk house for his friends to use when they hunt on his property, the tools and stuff joined his already impressive collection in the garage. My Dad has a small collection of pocket knives mostly ones that have a sentimental significance to him. They're kept in a wooden Jack Daniels box a bottle of some kinda select whiskey came in.

Does anyone have experience with this one from Harbor Freight?

I have one. It's not the same quality as a Gertsner but totally serviceable. I'd rather spend my money on more knives than on a fancy storage box. Not saying Gertsners aren't beautiful, they are. There are just limits to my resources and priorities enter the picture.

E29958CC-BB91-48F0-BCEF-EFEC9DEA84A8.jpeg Here’s a Walnut Gerstner I picked up several years ago and refinished. I dated this one to the early 50’s. If you keep your eye out you can find these priced pretty reasonable. I’ve picked up a few more that I still need to refinish. I’ve long outgrown this one and have overflowed into safes and Rubbermaid tubs:)

Some nice storage options displayed here.
My growing collection is comprised about 33 folders and things have got to the point where it's time for something better than the top drawer of a file cabinet.

This is what I came up with today puttering around with scrap wood in the basement workshop. I want to keep the file cabinet drawer going as long as I can. I used to just lay the knives in there on a piece of cloth, but they'd slide around each time the drawer opened and closed.

I recall hearing the Japanese are so pressed for graveyard space that they bury folks standing up. So I applied that space-saving theory to my drawer. I stood the knives up. Just drilled some holes in a piece of wood made to sit in the drawer. I also mounted feet on the wood, higher in the rear so it'll sit at a tilt. Smaller, shorter knives up front, larger taller ones at the rear.

It turned out pretty well.

I've picked up knives at an increasing rate since rejoining the forum last fall...just can't seem to stop for some reason. Am I alone, lol?!
