Traditional of the month: Stockman

Well I finally got my dark red bone medium stockman in CV on Monday. I have to say it was a bit smaller than I thought it would be although I love this thing. The springs on it are quite nice, and the pull on it is super light. I'm really enjoying this knife so far. Thanks for starting this thread and finally pushing me over the edge to get one of these.

My Case Pen, Peanut, and Mini Copperhead are eagerly counting the days until they get regular pocket time again, but I have to say I have somewhat surprisingly enjoyed sticking with just one style of knife as the main carry this month. If I had not picked up the Craftsman small stockman from Vanguard41xx a couple months ago, I doubt I could have made it all month. I just don't like to carry a knife in my pocket that is much bigger than 3" closed, and I prefer single spring knives.

If not for this TOTM idea I probably would not have bought this Case 6344 HE from jdracing, and now I am happy I have it.

Oddly enough, the stockman I have owned the longest, the Böker USA Tree Brand, saw almost no pocket time this month. As I said, I like something a bit smaller.

Here is the happy family all together.

It has been a fun experiment. Now if we were to choose a pen knife as July TOTM, I would have no trouble sticking with just one the entire month. Single backspring, baby!

I`ve been enjoying this thread very much. I am sooo close to pull the trigger on a Case Chestnut medium Stockman. I have been for all month nearly. Love the pinchable sheepsfoot blade. I think threads like these are a wonderful idea. It gives people the opportunity to check out new patterns they haven`t thought about that much, like me. I think I may have to get the stockman either way. As for next months, maybe a Trapper pattern would be in order, or a Barlow.

As for carrying my Buck 303; I have been carrying it for a couple of days last week, but I don`t like how it rolls in your pocket, and that the backsprings aren`t as hard as I like them. It`s also a tad too small for my large hands.

You can´t go wrong with a Stockman.

Kind regards

Hey Art, you can't go wrong with a stockman. I have four and each is very different from the other. The most pinchable sheepsfoot is on my Case 6318pu, I like this feature also as I use the sheepsfoot blade most, here are some comparison photos for you to ponder. I also find the Case the most comfy to carry.

Super nice knives guys. I really like yours Andi, and the yellow tree brand from you Stich is beautiful. I`ve been slowly falling for yellow knives, be it modern or traditional. Although I like bone better than I like the yellow delrin. I just wish Cases medium stockman in CV would come with a regular clip blade, rather than the californian, based on looks and from my experience with the Trapper model. But hey you can`t have everything. .:)

Thanks for the pictures, and I have to sleep on it what handle material I want. I want both :p

Doug

Your Tree Brand is one nice knife. I've always wanted one. Love that shield

Thanks. Interesting you should comment on the shield, as there is a story there.

This was my work knife when I was building docks on the lakes of South Carolina during grad school. It stayed in a slot of my leather tool pouch until needed for sharpening pencils, and dozens of other cutting tasks at the shop or on job sites.

Sad to say, it stayed in that slot of the leather tool pouch for nearly 25 years after I moved on from that job. It got pulled out occasionally for a cutting task, but mostly stayed put.

When my interest in pocket knives revived recently, I went to the shed to get the Böker out of the tool pouch. As you can imagine there was some rust on the blades. Also, the shield was missing. Who knows how long ago it fell off?

I sent it in to Böker USA, and they put a brand new Tree Brand shield on it, at no cost to me (other than mailing it to them).

Interesting story Doug. Now you have raised more questions...but I think it would cause a thread hijack...so I must refrain

I'm always surprised I don't see more Bokers around here, I love mine great work knife, their prices are good, lifetime warranty, and great customer service.
Doug thanks for all the pics at the beginning of the month, as you know you are the reason for the small Schrade stockman I found at the flea market. I am finding I like the smaller knives lately, my peanut and small Schrade stockman are almost always with me. ( my peanut is always in my coin pocket with my Zippo ) I've been rotating stockmans all month long.
What will next month be?

So start a new discussion with your questions. You know there are people here who can probably answer most of them.

You are welcome, and I am so glad you found one on your first time looking! Handy little knife, isn't it?

My gaggle of stockman that were in flight this month...or is that a skein;)

Thanks Doug ...I may do that.

Yes it is, that little stockman has made my peanut a little jealous, it has some of the same characteristics as the peanut, two springs a clip, a pen, but with the added benefit of the sheepsfoot, I'm surprised Case doesn't make a small CV stockman. It has made me realize I like carrying a small knife or two, I wish someone (Case or GEC ) would make a 3" two blade peanut style knife with a spear main blade and a wharncliffe secondary.

So, I think a poll should be held for what the next traditional of the month should be, an easy vote and makes keeping track a breeze, gunna post one, should run till the end of the month

For those of you who used just one stockman for the month, I hope you've built up a nice bit of patina and character. I know I've built a better bond with the little Case redbone stockman I've been toting around all month, and she's looking more like one of my knives what with all the apple carving.

Looking forward to next month, hope I have the pattern for whatever it works out to be.

For many years I carried a Vic Farmer and a Opinel, then it was the Vic Farmer and this Boker yellow bone stockman, and then the Boker stockman and my Opinel #9
The scales on this stockman are extremely smooth from years of use and pocket time.
Thanks Andi, for reminding me why I carried it for so many years.
The last two years I've complicated my EDC, but hey variety is the spice of life.

I know the scales don't match, I hand picked it out that way, I really like the pile side, the dark yellow patch was originally white.
