Traditional of the month: Stockman

Here are a few "oldies but goodies" I picked up for next to nothing. I really like the long clip on the Uncle Henrys. The large stockman is a Camillus Tobacco knife. really a good sturdy handful.

Great lookin camillus scattershot! Camillus made a lot of great knives. I'm a case man but camillus and schrade made some great working knives. I loved the 885uh until they went to china. Got to get me a GEC! Any recommendations for a stockman?

Have any of y'all heard of Montgomery ward knives? I have a 4 inch stockman that papaw put walnut handles on. The only one I've ever saw.

Montgomery ward was a large retailer, like Sears, that went out of business quite awhile back. They didn't make knives, but contracted with various makers and put their name on them. If you can post a pic, I'm sure some of the knife savvy guys here can tell you who made it. As far as a good useful stockman, it's pretty hard to beat a Case for the money.

I agree with scattershot, I have 3 stockman by 3 different manufactures and I like the Case with CV best, the Boker carbon I have is not bad either.

Doug Add, I don't know if you have one or not, but if you have a peanut could you take a pic side by side with your small stockman, I'm trying to gauge the size? I like to carve with my peanuts pen blade and my stockmans sheepsfoot and thought maybe the small stockmans sheepsfoot might be nice for detail work.

Trying to figure out what to carve next with my next peach pit?

Thanks for info guys! I'll get a picture up of it. Stitch, great job on the carvings they are great. I can c where that punch comes in handy for ya.

I have a lot of cases both cv and Tru sharp and whore out a few but I've never had or held a GEC ! I like tha calf roper model. I just wonder if they will take the abuse of a case. I can honestly say that A case lasted longer than a spyderco for me. I can use a case for a few years compared to a few months with some taticals. I just love traditional stockmans!

Thanks, ( carvings ) -I only have one GEC it's a Tidioute #54 moose and it's a workhorse, built like a tank, I almost bought the GEC stockman with the punch, but for me, I like a sheepsfoot instead of the Spey, plus the price was much cheaper for the Case. If I see another GEC that I like I would not hesitate to purchase it. The #62 courthouse whittler is on my short list of future purchases.

Yeah I like the GEC stockman patterns! I also like any stockman with a punch bc of the many blade saving uses. Id like to c case re introduse the four blade stockman with a punch; and instead of tha clip use a muskrat blade in tha 3 7/8 version. I have a large case stockman in cv and amber bone but it's really too much for me.

U know stitch, bear and sons offer a 4 inch stockman with a punch without a Spey like u like.

hi gents! couple questions with the 301. i bought a 301 with black saw mark handles (delrin?) i like the looks of it, really makes you think of grimy and oily workshops which is where this one is destined to hang out. how come some 301 stockmans have a blue anvil logos while mine has the knife and bolt? also, why does mine have only one handle-liner pin while the anvil has three? mine has an inverted T after the '301.' anything? thanks.

I am going to move that query to the Buck Forum. 300Bucks will answer your questions for sure.

GEC will absolutely last as long as a Case. I have a friend who uses his GECs for all his hunting and fishing needs. I've seen him at work. Those GEC's are built like tanks.

Thanks, I'll have to check it out, I don't know much about Bear & Sons, I know they make some Moore Makers, and I've read negative things about them on forums, but also read negative things about Case which is not my experience.

Thanks knarfeng, where I live case, boker, eye brands are really common. Everywhere feed store or flea market has cases. But no GEC products. They look awesome but before I'd put that money for a work knife I'd like to c one in person. I mite just breakdown and order one and put it to the test.

Yeah stitch I have a mooremaker trapper made by bear and it has great steel but for tha money u can't beat em. I think their stockman with tha punch came with either maple or rosewood handles and is round 35 dollars.

Thank you, that looks perfect for what I have in mind, I assume the other small blade is a pen not a Spey?
If its nice on Sunday I'll get to the flea market and see if I can track down a small stockman, I like carving with smaller blades.
-Pete

This is one of the Stockmans I will pair with other knives this month. I just love this old one. Looks hand forged damascusish ;)
