Upcoming Northwoods #54

Ok...trying to catch all the questions at once....

Trish is taking pictures of the camel bone as we speak and should have them up tomorrow.

As to what bone.... Not sure. On cows, it is the shin bone. The only thing I know for sure it is one on the inside. :)

And this run just has stag and bone. No wood this time.

Derrick,

I'm really interested to know the difference in thickness/width of the Rough Cut versus the Cashmere?

If you could ask your good lady to snap an 'overhead' picture for comparison that would be very helpful.

Thanks

You know what? I'm at the point where I'd be comfortable writing GEC a blank check. :)
These guys just care about making a good, solid factory knife. I love this thing.
(And props to Derrick for the vision and collab. :) I'm already looking forward to the next Northwoods.)

I would if I could. All the Cashmere are gone. :( Not a single one in the shop.

Only one Rough Bone left Scruffuk, better hurry. These bare-head equal ends are flying off Derrick's shelves! Look like you have yourself a winner, Derrick, and thanks for your efforts. My three are on the way! Photos upon arrival. :)

I have a stupid question about the grinds on these. There is a secondary bevel after the main grind, right? Or is it a true sabre/scandi grind? If so that would make for a truly unique blade.

It is a saber grind, but not scandi; there's definitely a secondary/edge grind visible in the pix posted above.

Order's in!

Managed to split le shipping with a friend over here, hurrah! With regard to the bevel I can see myself convexing the bevel to blend it with the main grind:)

I purchased one of the black bone ones. So now that I've already spent the money, I guess I should ask what the practical differences are between camel bone and bovine bone? Anything of note pertaining to durability/wear. or is it strictly cosmetic?

Congrats on your purchase, 'spam! I was thinking these would be great with a scandi or convex edge, too. Post some pix please if you do so...

It is denser than bovine bone so should be more durable; most has more character than bovine bone as well. You are gonna like it!!!!

I will do. I use the mousemat method to put a convex edge on pretty much all my knives now. This one looks like a prime candidate for someone learning this technique. You should be able to simply lay the main, sabre grind flat on a coarse grit sandpaper and work both sides until you hit the edge. then go up through the grits and finish with a strop. In theory the sabre grind will mean there will still be plenty of steel behind the edge.
