Upcoming Northwoods #54

I got my cashmere bone today as well. What a beast! it's a little bigger and more substantial than I thought it would be. It still fits in the coin pocket of my levis, and I must say that it carries well. Awesome job on the execution by GEC and the design is nice and simple. The pull is a bit tough, but is working in already. It has AMAZING snap opening.

Really fantastic job on the design and material choices by Derrick...... This one is a keeper!

I will do. I use the mousemat method to put a convex edge on pretty much all my knives now. This one looks like a prime candidate for someone learning this technique. You should be able to simply lay the main, sabre grind flat on a coarse grit sandpaper and work both sides until you hit the edge. then go up through the grits and finish with a strop. In theory the sabre grind will mean there will still be plenty of steel behind the edge.

I was thinking this knife would be a perfect candidate for this as well!
I picked up some wet/ dry sandpaper and a mousepad, but want to practice on some other knives first ;)
I look forward to your pics!

Got this much anticipated knife in the mail today. Steel construction with nickel silver trim and a firm spring complete this camel bone beauty. Great job Derrick and GEC!!!

Barry, Those look pretty good. I dig that spear and the camel bone looks nice, color looks great...imho

Got my cashmere bone in today, and I could not be happier. Suberb fit and finish, solid solid SOLID snap, and perfectly centered blade. The included sheath just sweetens the deal that much better. Also came shaving sharp, unlike my last GEC

Barry...

I can't blame you...both have fantastic bone coloring.......question though ..do they feel much different than the #53 TK Cuban..I know the blade on Derrick's is a little thicher

Excellent taste; were I picking this time around, those were two of my top three choices.

Is the knife on the left considered "purple"?

Also, from the angles I've seen so far, the bareheaded ends look like they taper more than some of GEC's others, ie, round down toward the scale instead of flaring out. Is this the case?

More pictures, please. :)

The spring is about the same width on both models, but the pull is a lot stronger on the Northwoods and... the NW has a square tang for a half-stop. (Me likey) So in answer to your question, they feel totally different. I'd say the NW feels alot more like the 54 Big Jack.

I would say it's a kinda purpley-brown; it was labeled as brown/white I think. The barehead is rounded and the knife is smooth as a... well you know how smooth it is.

Does anyone elses have blade rub or a blade that veers to one side a bit? My blade turns towards the left a bit and it was rubbing on the liners making it almost impossible to open without a key or something.. I have worked it in a bit, but was just wondering if anyone else had issues like this? Im very pleased with the knife in general though and dont really think it's a huge deal.

I got my cashmere bone today. Im loving it being as its my first high quality slipjoint. I'm afraid to say that im addicted. It sure is hard to open tho. I'm afraid I'm going to rip my thumbnail off opening it or loose my grip and chop off a finger or something. Will the spring loosen up over time?

It will likely soften somewhat over time. You could hasten the process by leaving the knife open overnight so as to have tension on the spring. It's a process though and the spring will likely remain fairly strong for a long time.

Send it to GEC. They fixed up a Eureka and got it back to me in about 3 weeks It had a little blade rub.

hey everyone! i'm a noob here, but just wanted to say SWEET JEEBUS! what are you doing to my wallet?! :D these GEC threads are so awesome. and these Northwoods knives are incredible! gonna get one!

Here are some comparison shots of the Northwoods Forester along side a Northfield TC Cuban and a Northfield stag 'Big Jack'. Boggs had asked about blade thickness so I measured with a caliper; NW at tang and along spine is 5.31mm thick wheras the NF TCC is 6.19mm at the tang and 4.19mm at the thickest point on the spine. So there you go Jim, hope this helps.

Pertinux asked about the end of the knife handle, so here's a look at that:

I love these beauties!!! F&F is excellent overall and the build is really robust; should last several lifetimes.
