Yeah, I know. It had a relatively short window of use historically though, I believe. It's more or less built for parrying rapiers. You could carry one, it would just be a bit uncomfortable with all the stuff sticking out, I think.

Yes it was found that this dagger was easier to carry around as a defensive weapon to compliment one’s rapier than a small shield like a buckler.

These are indeed parrying daggers known as “main gauche” which literally means left hand in French. Rapier in right hand and main gauche in left hand.

Still there is no reason they could not be used individually as a dagger. The guard is quite large for that use though.

Hey bud, what's the actual name of that style? Looks interesting.

These are known by many names depending on which African group you ask. They are most commonly called Kpinga or Humba Munga.

The idea is the blades are set so one will hit the enemy’s shield and cause the knife to tumble over the top lip of the shield and strike the defender. Of course like many african weapons these were status symbols.

Africans actually have lots of interesting weapons designed to counter shields like this Shotel sword.

Or this one I forget the name of.

Thanks guy! I got some reading to do. Only guys here would understand my love of edged tools and weapons! Thank you for additional pic!

Top one is a hunga munga, sometimes called mongwaba. It's the only one of the 4 I remember off the top of my head.

They’re all Hunga Mungas. Except for whatever that long bar is. There was no standard style for a Hunga Munga. Different tribes preferred different styles ar different timesnand often even within the same tribe there was no uniformity to their design.

I don't know what they call them, probably different names based on region. Maybe a "mojo knife". :) But what a bizarre bunch of blades.

If you read back a few posts you will see we were actually just discussing this very type of African throwing knife known as a Hunga Munga.

Here’s a useless one for the record books.
