Those pictures define...."a picture is worth a thousand words"

That bearing came in fast.

Agreed, the bearing did come fast! It was a cheap shot in the dark and and will work great for a replacement thrust washer. The box screw end is the one I need to replace but it needs a 1.75" bore diameter and the two auto parts places I went to today, neither was willing to play guessing games with me...

I found a site online that carries some harder to find bearing sizes that seems pretty cheap - they willingly took my money right away and shipped it to me 2 hours later.
Went with the 6809 clutch release bearing.

So we'll see. I'm going to try to disassemble that vise and clean it up.

Some lazy sobs at auto parts places here lately, took forever to get studs for a trailer hub last week none of them even went to check in the back.Hope they work there forever

My guys were friendly but not really sure how to look up the bearings they have in stock by bore diameter. One place, the guys were interested in the vise. I feel like the closer I am to the center of town, the less likely I am to get help with something out of the ordinary.

This has been a most valuable thread. Thanks Agent_H Agent_H for initiating the thread which has provided such a great block of discussion, example, history and education about a post vise in general.

To think I was satisfied with my post vise just because it was made in CT, had all its parts, the spring still sprung and the screw went in & out without hangups.

The discussions here have opened my eyes to what potential my vise has beyond it merely working.

S Square_peg to learn from your posts that the legs generally had a steel foot...and I saw yours in a photo...beautiful and lends me ideas for mounting mine.
Your R.R. spike to bracket...oh man that whole process could have been forge porn.

I'd never seen these until this thread and now one comes up for sale here locally. Coincidence?

That looks like an old Iron City. Depending on how much they are asking and if it is working, that might be a winner after tune-up.

Indeed, I dig these things!

I’m wondering what people’s assessment of this one is?
It’s old looking and I like how the wood is incorporated into it.
Looks like the wooden part of the vise (not the post piece of wood) was supposed to be there, but maybe it’s cobbled together?

I wonder it it was broken then modified? The jaw in this picture looks repaired and a plate attached to the backside.

Here it looks a little like a part of a screw box down in there but on the back is a secured square nut. They need some play up and down to open and close so if the box stays rigidly in place the the play would have to be on the handle end. That might account for the space between the bolts on the handle end- to allow movement. The large washer on that end doesn’t look like it mates with the existing hardware at the base of the spindle.

I could be totally wrong too - after all, that is definitely a vise and a post together!

First of all ithinkverydeeply ithinkverydeeply ... way cool the items you find and possess. I am blown away at your finds and collection.

I am thinking Agent_H Agent_H put best into words what I was looking at too.
And he is correct in that I too could be totally wrong as well, I have only just recently been reading up on post vises.

Reminded me of working different farms here... tobacco, apple orchard, and nurseries. Each farm I worked, always had a shop and it was up to us, to figure, devise and simply make work what we had...after the days work was done.

I could be totally wrong but it reminds me of good old New England Farmer Inginuity...and a lot of grit.

It's cool, at the right price...I am a sucker for the beaten and abused underdog though :D probably due to my love for making something work or at least try, that others have passed on or discarded.

I am sure now that you have a post vise on the radar...you will start seeing them pop up:thumbsup::cool:

Thank you, I really appreciate the compliment!
I just wish I wasn’t limited by available space and funds.

It's cobbled together. The screw is way too small for that vise.
