WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: GEC Outlaw Jack #76

Congrats on both fronts. I am sure that outlaw will be a great companion as you start your trek into married life.

Thanks man, I think I have a winner on both fronts. :)

The knife reminds me of the old Case knives. I'm not sure if it is the geometry of the backsprings with different thicknesses. Maybe the very nicely squared off bolsters. Maybe the relative thickness of the scales to the backsprings.... I'm not sure what it is but the knife reminds me of the old Case stockman and serpentine jacks. It is much more trim than the 66 frame and that surprised me. It is very substantial without being either heavy or thick. I REALLY like this knife.

Congrat's Will, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year of married life:)

You've got me excited about this knife again!

Great photos Jazub! The Root Beer is really awesome, and the pattern is going to displace the 66 and 33 as my favorite frame.

Thank you very much for the kind words gents. I'll be sure and take a few snapshots of me and my lovely bride using my new knife at the pig roast tailgate celebration we have planned for after the wedding. :)

I didn't get any pics last night (in the middle of a move so can't upload from my camera and my new phone wasn't focusing right so it took my two ways of posting pics out). But I can tell you this, when laid flat on their sides the copperhead bone 76 is thinner than my burnt chocolate bone 66 by almost exactly the thickness of the scale/handle. I figure that is maybe 1/8" or a thereabouts, a bit less maybe. You can feel the difference in your hand and in your pocket. Add to that the fact that the 76 is a bit taller and you have a knife that doesn't try to roll in your pocket and is surprisingly pocket friendly.

The main clip is a bit of a changeup for GEC as well. They seem to have used a profile similar to the old File & Wire gunstock from Schatt and Morgan. Not as exaggerated as that but still a bit taller than normal. The knife seems to be one that tips its hat to quite a few of the old classic knives I've seen.

Thanks Will for painting a great picture. An entire scale thickness thinner is a huge difference. I wanted this one bad, then started thinking it was just too close to a 66 for me to purchase and I jumped back on the fence. Thinner and taller could be big enough improvements and having both nail pulls on the mark side is a very nice touch.

The pattern is Gunstock but for some reason they have not done the pattern in ebony wood(somehow I associate the word gunstock with wood)? I thought every pattern had an ebony version? I hope they are saving it for something special. Many folks on here have wanted ebony to be released as a Northfield scale for some time. I think you could release an ebony Northfield with a coping second with long pulls on both blades on the same side. GEC already makes the long pull coping as seen here...

I know I am a broken record on this subject but to me it just makes sense. They dont have to make anything new and they would give the consumers another option/version to buy. Look at the 33 pattern. Try finding the coping version of that one, sure one or two are around(non with bail) but the majority of those got purchased, finding a 33 with a pen blade is not hard at all. Alright I will step of this soapbox and move on, one can only hope at this point.

Cool.
If it weren't so danged small, I'd be more tempted. Why can't they make a few more man-sized patterns?

At last count, out of GEC's twenty-odd frame patterns, sixteen of them are 3-3/4" or larger (some considerably), including the #12, #23, #36, #42 #45, #46, #48, #53, #54, #61, #62, #65, #72, #73, #79 and #89.

FWIW, based on a recent GEC popularity-by-pattern poll here in the Traditional board*, only one of the bulkier frames (the #73 Scout) made it to the top five, so if anything, it might behoove them to focus more on the sub-3-1/2" range.

I should have noted that the 66 I was comparing width to was the bullwinkle. Dont have the 66 jsck so I cant compare it to ghe 76.

Sorry for any confusion I might have caused.

I can't wait for my #76 yellow rose to get here! I just saw some pictures on a dealer sight and the bone looks great, has very subtle green tones towards the edges, just what I was hoping for!

I should have just picked one of these up when I ordered the Maverick. It is inevitable after all :D

I was browsing the new stag offerings today and went to pull the trigger.......only to watch as all 3 of the best stag handles out their got snagged 1,2,3 in front of my eyes before I could click the buy it now....ughhhh nice scores for one lucky collector!

No need to apologize about the confusion you may have caused. Anyone getting married within a month or so is in a state of confusion and may therefore convey that confusion to others.

However, it's not the confusion I'm worried about. A few days ago you said;

"I bought this one to go along with my upcoming marriage in a month. Don't know if I can wait that long to stick it in my pocket."

Good Lord - put the knife in your pocket now!!!!!!

Fair enough. Guess I haven't compared my personal preferences with any relevant market research. ;)

Lol, it has been tempting but I believe I have the willpower to resist until the wedding day. Heck, I waited for years for Queen to add their version of the serpentine jack in 1095 and that never happened. Plus I have thought the simple 2 blade jack my favorite pattern my whole life and this is the first one I have ever bought. Hard to believe!

I did finish sharpening it and then did a final strop last night. Then I cleaned out the joints and got it walking and talking like a new knife should. It is razor sharp and looking beautiful. Should be a wonderful long term companion.
