Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

Justin, for the sake of all that is holy... get a freaking tan or cover those legs  Please... my 10 year old daughter walked by the computer and took one look and fainted. If not for us do it for the children. :D

That is a cool outfit. A buddy of mine has asked about me making a dress knife... err heck I dunno how to spell it, the black knife sock dagger thingy you guys in skirts seem to favor. :D

See, they come in handy ! =)

Oh and it turns out that it's not a Sherrifmiur Doublet either ! It's a regulation doublet. Just about the only difference between the two is that a regulation doublet has lapels where a Sherrifmiur does not and a regulation doublet can be worn with a bow tie and not be out of place. (which is a good thing because I don't have a jabot yet)

Looks good Justin. Thanks for clarifying the jacket type.I thought the collar seemed wrong for a Sherrifmiur. I never really looked it over much, since it was too small for me. I'm really glad it has now found a new owner. It should be a grand Burn's Nicht in your new threads.

January 16, 2009

Late night was a cold one here. The temperature was -18 degrees But the chill factor maked it colder at my home. I live nearby White River. I was up about 330 a.m. this morning and went to get a drink of water but there was none in the kitchen. The cold water line was froze up. But there was running water in the rest of the house. So, I just put three or four pieces of wood in the stove and went back to bed.

I been working on some new knife designs. I got all my orders done and up to date. Today I went out to get some more wood and the air like to cut me and in half. Later on, it was great to get a hot cup of coffee. Setting around the wood stove with a cup of coffee is the best way to enjoy the winter day. Satuday will see if I can get out in the shop to work on the new projects that are in progress. Sunday is family day. How's your week-end looking. And is it cold there where you live.

it's in the mid 60s here. So I'm fleeing the shop for a few hours to take the puppy and my son out for a run in the country. Then some work on orders and finishing a little bird and trout with a black acacia handle. My father in law is a horticulturist at the San Diego Zoo and sent me some wood he'd cut from down'ed trees in the collection. So the black acacia is cool mostly for the provenance.

weather looks good for a few more days so I'll gt a trip to the range in, but mostly I'm trying to make use of it to get a lot of shop time in- finishing the next spanish dirk, the field dirk, a half dozen longer blade orders..

Oh, and annealing 40 pounds of 15N20 I just got in the mail :D

Lesseeeeee, I've got 6 blades tempering right now. 3 more that need various states of grinding. I just finished forging MY personal EDC (finally, you'd think after these years I'd have my own freaking knife) and another one of my FB Pocket Knives.

2 of the blades tempering are straightforward, one is a Pocket Knife, the other a version of my "Lemon Cutter" knife, going to hemp wrap the Lemon Cutter and leather wrap the PK.

2 blades tempering are basic hidden tang EDC type knives, cocobolo for one, not sure maybe bocote for the other.

Last 2 blades are more complex, one is a smallish 6" bowie/belt knife, the other is my version of a cartouche/Fogg Gent's knife. I'm planning on some simple sanding/carving on the handle and the integral portion.

Mainly I'm trying to stay warm... mid teens with a high of 45ish.. that's freaking cold for a Southern man.

I have a new maker coming to visit on Sunday morning. He'll be starting his first knife. Should be a lot of fun!

hmmmmmmmm...Am I the only one that finds wearing a bow tie with a "skirt type" outfit being classified as "NOT" out of place as...well...out of place?:)

Looking forward to a day in the shop tomorrow:rolleyes:-Its supposed to be -20 or so and I ran out of fire wood for the shop:grumpy:.I've got 3 knives in the works-a 1095 dagger,a 5160 fighter, and a 1084 utility.

Scott, I merely poke fun at somebody I'm very SURE doesn't mind. Anyone wearing a kilt in public in the US obviously doesn't suffer from self conciousness. :)

The watering hole I hang out at is the kind of place where you could walk in wearing a kilt and people would look and turn around. I have a buddy that does construction and wears a camo kilt most of the time.

I'm Japanese and used to wear a kimono to some cultural gathering thingys when I was younger. I'd probably still do it but can't afford one :)

I've had a few odd comments about my kilt. In the local pub once I had the following conversation

(on a weekend, it's on topic!)

"Why are you wearing a skirt?"

"It's a kilt"

"looks like a skirt, why do you wear it?"

"I don't like going around in drag. Pants are obviously made for people without balls. Generally that's girls. I don't wear girl clothes, it hurts my balls"

Got a few good laughs, and a free round of beer.

Looks like I'm spending the weekend instead of at the blacksmithing get together i was planning on attending, and finishing the knife I'm making for a gift... I will instead be buying and installing an electric heater for my basement, since apparently even though upstairs is set to 55 when I'm away from home, the basement still gets cold enough that my pipes are freezing if the temp is cold enough... which it has been the last 2 days.

The joys of a 100 year old house *sigh* ... did i call it a house? I meant money pit.

you can get electric heating tape that is meant for wrapping pipes, in the short term if you leave your faucets running with a medium drip that will help keep the ones that aren't frozen yet from freezing. I have a heat vent on the pipes from my furnace in the basement, I have opened that up a bit in the last couple days

the problem is, it's not the water pipes that are freezing, it's the furnace pipes. iv'e got running water fine, but the furnace wont work, it cant circulate water. And there's no access to the pipes where it's freezing, they're in the walls, which are uninsulated walls.

Hey Justin:

Is there anyway you can get hot air into the walls? Like using a hairdryer or something that will blow in behind the walls, that will defrost the pips. Perhaps a space heater will do the job. If you can leave it there by the wall. Hope this was of help. I did get my pipes unfrozen in the kitchen yesterday.

Well I wasted all of Saturday. :(

Went to my favorite local watering hole because my favorite band and friends of mine just came back from a west coast tour (long way for some boys from Alabama.) Let's just say I spent Saturday resting. Plus side is I'm up at 430am to go work in the shop. :)

This afternoon I will put the finishing touches on the Scottish short sword I am donating to the Burn's Nicht raffle. It is just about all done ,except the final assembly. Then I will haft some hawk polls that I have.

Figured by your age you'd have enough experience to avoid that begginer problem :) Once at a Army party I woke up because the maid was hitting me in the head with the vaccum cleaner, I had one shoe on (not mine) and someone else's shirt. Lost my glasses too. :( Now I wear extended wear contacts and keep spares in the truck. :p
