Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

The kilt I ordered last january arrived ! So yeah, I definately need to finish a jacket for more formal wear asap. 2 weeks to learn how to sew and alter this coat and make it not look like crap before i need it.

(yes the picture is crapy, and i realize my shirt is skewed to the side, but it was the best quick photo i could get of myself with the timer on my camera.

From a particular maker who got the tartan woven and has another job, yeah. But it was well worth the wait, he's one of the best there is, the constructioin is perfect, and it fits like a glove. There's a reason that despite knowing you'll have probably a minimum 6 month wait at any one time he's got a queue of anywhere from 30 to 50 kilts long at any one time right now.

I highly recommend him! Excelent service, unparalleled quality, and you'll have something that your great grand kids can inherit (if you take care of it)

I'm Japanese, Irish and Canuck... Miyagi, Scott, Leavitt...... don't think there's much tartan in my background, well at least as it was explained to me..... I am married to a McGlamry though.

Nice kilt Justin.
I think I asked you once, but what jacket size do you wear?

Go to thrift store that gets a lot of military uniform items and look for a mess dress jacket. It will work just fine as a Prince Charlie substitute. If you don't find one, buy a tuxedo jacket (I have found them for as little as $1).Take out the bottom seam and shorten the waist up to the just about the top of the kilt ( roughly the top of the belt, but it can vary depending on your waist and what you like in the fit). Shorten the tails if needed ,and fold them up. Sewing them in place with four silver metal buttons. Change the other buttons to silver metal, too. All this takes about an hour of two to do. Iron on seam tape is your friend here,BTW. Look at some photos of Charlie coates or borrow one from a friend to use as a model as you modify yours.

Just came back from a tux rental place to see if they sold previously rented jackets, but no luck. I did however get measured while i was there so I actually know my size now. They said for a normal sports coat that I should wear a 40R or L (depending how I like the cuffs on my sleeves) but for a prince charlie or other kilt jacket which is supposed to be more 'fitted' a 38R would probably be better.

Stopped by goodwill on the way back home, and of all things they even had a tweed kilt jacket in their coat rack... but it was like size 30... All the coats they had in my size were in really really bad shape. Anyways, spending the afternoon now chopping up this 36R jacket that I used to wear in high school to take up the bottom and let out a seam in the back a little and hopefully it'll be passable =) I havent regularly worn a jacket since high school where I had a dress code, and most of my old coats are all 36R, and a bit too tight now.

I woulda bought the kilt jacket regardless, you'll find SOMEONE of the right size!

Around here you can pretty much just take a photo or book to a tailor and get better quality at a lower price than most of the 'suit stores'.

Justin,
Send me your shipping address.
Santa missed your house last week and left some things for you here.

I just went to the closet to check on several old jackets that I made. I have a black formal Prince Charlie, and a blue one, both custom made,so I will never wear any of these again.

There are five old jackets in there (actually seven, but I am keeping two heavy ones for cold weather parades).
One is converted from a mess jacket and looks pretty nice. I hand braided the epaulets.
One is re-sewn (by me) from a tuxedo jacket. It is OK, but pretty light weight wool.
One is completely re-sewn by me from a very high quality tuxedo jacket. It is a first rate jacket and looks great.
One is a blue jacket (sort of a short mess jacket look) that I made from an air force uniform jacket (Russian or Checz, IIRC).
These four range in size from 40R to 42R.

The last one is the real prize.
It is a full Montross with the vest. It belonged to a long time friend, who passed away, and it was given to me by his family. It is very old, but in good shape. A few stitches in the lining seams and trip to the cleaners would be about all it needs.
Size is a 38-40R by my guess. Hand made in London by Stark brothers 70-80 years ago.
There are hidden pockets in the flaps, and inside pockets, too.
It is lined, padded, and quilted on the inside. This was not a cheap coat and vest when it was made.
It is your no, if it fits.

I am shipping the whole batch to you.
Keep what fits you and pass the rest on to others with my compliments.
If the Montross won't work for you ( I think it will fit perfect) I would like to have it back, but if it fits, it is yours for keeps.

I can have them to you by mid-week. If you get the Montross to the cleaners ASAP, it should be ready to go easily by Burn's Nicht. The stitching in the lining is just a few minutes work (I'd suggest you do it before the cleaning).

I got it.
For the rest of you, I was calling the jacket a Montrose, but it is a Sherrifmuir (which is much nicer). Here is a picture of one.

Hey Justin, I don't know any easy way to say this, but, um... dude, you're wearing a dress in that pic.

Well, after the email I got tonight I should probably edit my post above, but I'm still pretty confident that Justin will know I was just josh'n him. :)

For god's sake Nick, have you not hurt enough feelings for one day??:D

Not sure who would take up the challenge in our area, but you really should see a plastic surgeon about those knees.

I'm sorry Justin, I don't know what came over me (probably Nick's bad influence), I'm sure someone will find those kneecaps of yours something less than nauseating.:barf::rolleyes::D Knifemaker and a seamstress, gotta be a forum for that. Seriously, nice kilt.

Well be getting all the photo work done this weekend. My business cards came in yesterday and I was happy with them. I order up 1000 cards. I posted the card on the poll I started for all to see. But I will post it in here as well. So, what's going on in your neck of the woods this week-end.

A package arrived from Stacy yesterday, and i spent last night and this morning re-stitching some seams and the lining where the prior stitching had come undone or was real loose, and the gorgeous doublet and vest fit perfectly , almost like they were made for me! Again, sorry for the real poor quality pictures, my camera stinks at focusing when I use the self timer, and i think I've got dust on the lens.
