Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

Well tonight I chopped wood for the retort, tomorrow my girl is coming over and I'm gonna run the retort. Sunday I'm working a shift at the farm, preparing my hammer dies for welding, and maybe finishing the connections for the clutch and brake on the hammer.

No real big plans. Probably work on a knife in the morning, maybe take my sweety out for a ride in the afternoon.

Mothers Day, I will be going to a cookout at my sisters, most of the family will be there, but it doesn't start till late afternoon. I'll figure something to do in the morning and early afternoon.

The drummer in my band has been busting my balls about learning a few tunes that he is doing lead vocals, so I'll definitely be spending some time practicing a few particular songs (gotta have them ready for Tuesday rehearsal).

Oh Also, if anyone in the new england area has a 2' x 2' or 2'x3' piece of sheet metal 14 gague or thicker (up to 1/4 inch or so, dont want anything too heavy) that they'll part with, let me know =P I need one for the new forge i'm building and i wasnt able to get down to turner steel this last week.

Today: touched up next knife, ground convex bevels, attempted to make a handle, but I cracked two scales as I was taking them off to apply epoxy

Tomorrow: attempt to make the handle some more, and possibly a sheath for the knife.

just had my boys first base ball game.

gonna put rotors on my grandpaps truck, look for muchrooms, and fight with the g.f. as much as possible.....all other waking hrs will be spent in shop as usual...:p

I am hoping to get some grinding/learning time in. Haven't had enough of that as of late. Fix my lawn tractor and clean the garage.

It's snowing again this morning, about a half an inch on everything. With it being on the cool side again, I'll be working on the wood pile. Best to do the hard physical work while the cool weather lasts. If the weather improves, I hope to get out to the camp and canoe the lake. Ice went out last week on smaller lakes, big ones are still holding ice.

Setting back this week-end with family and friends. Hope your mother has a GREAT MOTHERS DAY.

Just got back from Mother's Day at my in laws. My father in law was kind enough to buy the lumber and cut and drill it to size for my anvil stand. Thanks Don!!!

Heading up to the New England Blacksmith's spring meet in brentwood NH this weekend + friday Weather should be nice too, yay!

It is only Wednesday night and I am already getting stoked about Saturday. Chris ( knifemaker87) is bringing the sword over Saturday afternoon. That will make for a great day.

I am also getting all the junk and old stuff that I am having the trash man haul away ready for the pickup next Wednesday. That will prepare for the rebuild of the smithy area ( some rebuild and some expansion).I am taking the week of Memorial day off to work on the yard, gardens, and smithy.

Well my weekend starts today. :) I finished the clutch and brake on my fairbanks last night, it goes from 270BPM to 0 in half a second... not bad. My buddy has a lot more experience welding thick metal so I'm gonna harass him for a few days until he welds my dies. Hehehe. Tomorrow I'm continuing to build the tatara, running the charcoal retort, and maybe polishing a tanto.

If I get something done by the weeks end, I plan to goto a farm/tractor show north of where i live, gonna take my children, and let'em run wild for a bit. Then got to take a hot water tank to the cabin, so me and the granfather will spend the rest of the weekend, and maybe even couple days in the begining of next week up camp, ill be hunting shrooms all day, and scavanging at yard sales i imagine:p

well it's Thursday now. Packing for the first medieval society camping event of the year (and waiting for pictures from the turkey quench :D)

Its a #150 but with the dies its closer to #180. Its a fairbanks but it has a custom built dupont style face on it; the face is made to adjust as the hammer wears so you always have excellent control. I saw that you have a #50, very nice! I just wish there was more information on fairbanks hammers, their so well designed but underrated because of the scarcity.

Old pic before I had the clutch and brake hooked up.

Do you have any of the paperwork that's available? If not I can send what I have.
As I understand it, these were common on naval vessels. I know a fella who saw dozens of these pushed overboard as it was cheaper than offloading at the dock.
I got my prnted info from the Sudemeirs and a fella in Indiana. Fella who owns the name isn't much help.
