Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

I am working all week on the yard and smithy. I took a straight week off from work - and that almost never happens.

Yesterday I brought in 5 yards of top soil, 5 yards of mulch, 200 Windsor wall blocks, and all the building materials, all together the days weight being moved/loaded/unloaded was around 23,000 pounds. I had my grandson (age 15) help. We got the top soil put down to level the low spots in the back yard, the materials stacked, and the mulch started. We will spread the mulch Monday.

My granddaughter (age 9) spent the night. It was fun watching a movie, and watching grandma reading with her.

Today , the wife and I are driving to Richmond to see the kids. baby is due in four weeks.

Tomorrow, after spreading the mulch, I will add a couple hundred sq.ft. to the decking of the smithy and add a 12X8 storage area for equipment and steel.

Rest of the week will be spent on smaller house, yard, and smithy projects. I'm going to try and finish "The Ultimate Controller",too.

Next weekend, I want to forge a couple swords, so the entire week won't be a waste.

Spent yesterday at IG's, had a great time, and forged a billet of cable damascus which I gave to Jeff Springer, as it was his first time at George's. Today i'm cleaning the house and mowing the lawn. The #@#%@ new hofi style hammer with a square handle that I got last weekend, which i decided to give a try, rubs my hand wrong and gave me blisters, so i don't want to do much hammering for a day so hopefully they go away and i can get a bunch more work done Monday.

Monday Dan Pierson is visiting me at my shop and we'll get some forging done.

Going to try to finish building the new coal forge to go with my bellows this weekend, and get as much forging time as i can in.

If anyone in the MA or RI area wants to hammer out some blades or do some general blacksmithing at my shop this weekend, just fire me of a PM or something and let me know. Should be around and in the shop all weekend.

Today I will start a new knife design. I been tossing it around in my head on making a barbecue grill knife to be used for separating ribs and and slicing meet and what else the wife and me want to uses for. This one will not be a large knife but yet sufficient to do the job. Most of the time I start out with a set of french curves and paper and design it all out on paper. At this point in the project usually takes several hours to complete. But the effort is worth the end results. :)

I also got my yard work out of the way yesterday. I purchase a Workx GT for trimming and edging the lawn. And I must say it work just like they advertise on TV. I purchased two batteries for the unit. This way I have one as a backup when I one in use goes down. I have not seen any snakes in the yard lately. The river is nearby and when the rains come the river rises and floods out the field that is just behind my home. This makes the snakes to moved to higher ground. The river is down a the present time, so that why I do not see any activity. But they will return sooner or later.

Sunday will be a hot day here with the high humidity. But that's family day here. Hope all of you good folks enjoy the week-end.

Need to finish my new coal forge this weekend for the blacksmith demos I'll be doing this summer, since the first one is next weekend. Working on a cable Damascus fancy letter opener for a friend if i end up with any spare time after finishing the forge.

Well today I am going to a Gem and Mineral show to see if I can find some decent stone. Getting good stone for use as knife scales is VERY difficult but I do have 30+ years worth of top end stone in my personal collection so I won't run out soon. I hope to at least find some jewelry grade Lapis Lazuli from Afganistan as the mines are currently not being worked due to the Taliban retaking control of the area so I am not too hopeful.

The rest of the weekend will be spent working on knives. I have 7 that have the stoneworks done but I still need to polish the bolsters, clean and photograph them which will take all of Saturday. Sunday I will spend doing layouts and cutting stone blanks so that Monday I can start working on a new batch of stone knife scales. I have gotten my backorder load down to less than ten for the first ime in many months so I am actually going to try and cut it to ZERO in the next three weeks....

I think (scary) that I will build a Laptop forge this weekend to put up for sale.
Have to groom and bathe the 3 dogs. Jaguar( Keeshound) takes at least 3 hours to brush.:jerkit:

Well, it looks like I'm picking up my Carlisle press this weekend! :D

Of course, I've got to drive halfway to Pittsburgh today to swap the Honda for the truck since my wife is out of town taking care of relatives and has the truck. Then tomorrow to Delaware to load the press up and come home. If I bust my hump Saturday and Sunday I might get the electric run to get it up and squashing steel this weekend! Then there's dies to make and an order to start working on next weekend. I've got a total of 25 linear feet of 2" wide damascus stock that has to be forged and ground over the next 6 weeks or so, then (hopefully) a couple more orders backlogged behind that and the press will be paid for!

After that it's smooth sailing into making stock damascus for myself and other folks. It's gonna be a busy couple of months, but boy will it be worth it to have a press finally....
