Attention Well, what form should our BF Forum knife's bone handles take for 2021??

I've done my share of gunstocks, so I know what it takes. If we go smooth bone I may have to dig out my tools.
Then you should realize it’s probably impossible to do what you’re proposing be done?
Along with the fact that no current knife manufacturer has shown the capability to do checkering like that shown. (at least any that we want to use)

I never said it was easier to carry. But if done as shown below it would be more comfortable in a pocket.

I realize it's not something most people on this forum have experience with, checkering on knives being rare. But I continue to hold out for a forum knife that doesn't trend toward mediocrity. I find it incredibly sad that back when we had runs of 100 knives we could dictate what we wanted and now, when 500 knifes are being touted, we're settling. I'm firm in the belief that going back to 100 knives in a pattern not produced in 50 years would be of more benefit to the hobby than another run of 500 where the only differences from every other production run are so miniscule nobody will ever notice.

I agree with you Charlie . It should be somewhat Special . That is why we should be able to get Steel Liners & Pins to start with . It would also be nice to get some of that pretty nice Jigging that GEC can , but seldom , do .

Improbable, not impossible. Made more so by the large number of the proposed run.

The number of knife manufactures who have offered checkering is way too long for me to list. And I'm talking about production houses, not customs. Almost every German and English maker had it as an option; some still do. American makers have also offered it, although mostly on higher end knives. For something really special look for checkered mother of pearl sometime. (Checkering MOP was, and is, very dangerous to the individuals health.) I'm given to believe that even GEC has offered "Scratting" which is pretty close.

Machine checkering (via CNC) is much more accessible for production runs than it ever used to be. It's not that unusual on modern frames. My belief is that most traditional "knife collectors" have never considered it due to lack of experience or it's being less common in traditional patterns over the last 50 years.
 
I voted smooth. Blue (camel?) would be my first choice but ivory is more than acceptable. If saw cut wins, more than happy with that as well. I tend not to like the light/bright colors that show through like pink, orange, and red, but elderberry or browns are very nice and classy.
And- no brass for smooth bone.
 
As for Chequering the scales, it is a very admirable finish but for those who believe it's the preserve of the Knifegods I've got sobering news for you: RR have done it in Green and Brown and the results are I'm afraid, not to be sneered at...

But, They aint doing this knife and it HAS to be Smooth Bone anyway-for the reason already aired that you can then get Scratty with it yourself should you dare 😝
 
I have always wanted to scrat/checker a knife!! think I'll get them anyways!!
I didn't want to hijack this thread...that was never my intention. But Charlie that big black jack has been tempting me to break out the tools for over a year now. I just can't bring myself to cut the only one I have, and really, I don't need another project. (I have closets full of them.)
