Whacha Been Up To......

It is pretty cool stuff , different too. Doesn’t like wet molding too much though. I’ll be making another one of these. But I’m going to deepen the carry insert more on that one 👍
Yeah I tried making a few sheaths and wet molding them but its not that leather’s forte for sure. Quit it for sheaths.

Well finished off a batch of knives and sheaths:

Course been busy with the lil guy too:

UKFJ8Vs.jpg

Getting him started on being halter broke.

We were gone for a few days too. Made a flying dash up to central NV last Tuesday. 5 hours up for us and 5 hours down for my son and his wife. We met in Alamo NV and he and I swapped horses, one of mine for one of his. Turned around and come back. Then Thursday and Fri we went north here in Ca a couple three hours outside of Clovis. We'd sent Nichole's three year old filly off to Chino Valley in AZ for a couple of months of training. The trainer was putting on a clinic here in Clovis and he hauled the filly back for us. On the day before the clinic he was able to spend a lot of time with Nichole and working with the horse. Nichole and our friend Jeff that did the training. Nichole is on her three year old filly Hatari. For M Macan notice that Hatari is wearing what we call a hackamore on her nose that the reins attach too. These are braided rawhide or in this case softer latigo. No bit in the horses mouth.

Dave thank you , I always thought that hackamore is used when horse is grazing grass not for riding :) Its on my list to learn , when I got my hands on rawhide. Your work is great and since those women purses/bags looks great, You should do something for men, around waist or on the belt,

You might be thinking of a halter, not a hackamore. Some folks will graze horses in pastures with halters so they can catch them. We don't cause its kinda dangerous for the horse. A hackamore form the Spanish (La Jaquima) is made of three parts. 1) The Bosal. This is the braided noseband that goes around the horses nose. 2) The Mecate (Spanish again for hair rope). These are generally made out of twisted mane hair from a horse but sometimes tree line or braided parachute cord. The mecate becomes the reins when attached to the bosal. 3) The Hanger. a light piece of leather that attaches to the bosal on each side and is used to hang the bosal on the horses head. All three of these items make it a hackamore. Our young friend Emma after winning the junior ranch horse class at a show. She is riding Notch in a hackamore.

Thank You for explanation!
Ya bet my friend. The interesting thing for a braider such as yourself is there are such a wide variety of bosals to be made. Part of the process of training a horse in this fashion is that you need a wide variety of bosals in different sizes and different firmness. We literally have a whole wall of bosals and bought another one from a braider friend who was at that clinic selling his wares, when we picked up Nichole's filly. A pic of a different friend, Vince Donley's booth some years back:

Braided bridle reins. I have a pair of bridle reins by Vince and they are simply the finest I've ever used. Period.

Easier by the 3/4 dozen: I had eight rifle scabbards to do. So I did em all at once. All cut out, tooled and waiting for the glue to dry:

Lazy S Lazy B brand above. Large initials tooled and dyed:

Glued in place prior to sewing:

Those five chestnut scabbards all came from one side. It was a huge side with very little waste. Still got some holsters and sheaths to get from that side:

All sewn up and ready to have the excess trimmed off the bottom:

All oiled up:

k1Mbsu7.jpg

Ya know how I'm always preaching oil lightly? I've found the secret with the chestnut is to use even less than the russet. Like half. The chestnut just seems to absorb the oil different than the russet and will stay splotchy longer. Days longer. So having learned that I really go lightly on the chestnut and then leave em overnight. Come out the next morning and they are bout as good as ya can get as far as the oil setting:

Since these pics I've rubbed the edges and finished the scabbards with Oakwood. I've also cut all the straps and will be working on them today.

Well got those all finished. Ran out of buckles so one won't ship for a while. I have its straps done just need to rivet on the buckles when they get here.

The seven shipping out this morning. Five different orders:
