What cheap knives do you think are a must have?

A few come to mind...

Benchmade Griptilian
Buck 110 & 112
Kershaw OD-1
Opinel (any)
Cold Steel American Lawman
Becker (any)
Iisakki Järvenpää Lapland Puukko
Swiss Army Knife - Explorer

Where are folks buying new Benchmade Griptilians for under $50??:):)

Seriously speaking, I think these knives are incredible deals for under $40 and would cover anyone's needs anywhere in the world (even though I own and enjoy Benchmades and Spyderco over this price range):

Folders:
Gerber EZ Out, Made in USA, 2.6 oz, 3.5" blade that cuts like my Mora, and quality and ease of opening like my Spydercos, $27 shipped on Amazon
Gerber LST original and II, Made in the USA, under 2 oz, great reputation, great cutting blades
Any Victorinox Swiss Army Knife!

Fixed blades:
Any Mora Knife!!!
Ontario Air Force SP2
Cold Steel Bushman
Bucklite Max

I didn't see it mentioned which is really hard to believe. The kershaw RAM is about the best $45 you can spend.

I second the Kershaw Skyline

I definitely agree that Kershaw makes some very high quality US made knives for the money. My problem with them has been that each one has some nagging issue in the function (at least for me in comparison to other lower price high quality knives). The Skyline is brilliant, except that closing the liner lock is a total PIT* compared to any other liner lock knife I've tried (I bought 2 and tried a 3rd at Walmart). The Scallion is also brilliant, but the scimitar shape of the blade reduces its effectiveness for an all round pocket knife for me.

If Kershaw made the Skyline with an easier closing liner lock I'd buy one in a heartbeat! Great blade, weight, and feel otherwise!

As much as I like most of these suggestions, the only 'must have' that really pops into my head is a SAK, I can't think of another tool that offers so much for your dollar, and so much variety to serve personal needs and preferences. I also can't think of another tool that pairs so well with just about any other knife.

Another vote for Mora and Opinel. Best valued knives I have IMO. Don't own one, but a SAK Farmer would probably be up there. Though the first two companies really cheap (as in low cost) and useful knives.

A Leek and SAK are must haves in my book along with this one.
Every TRUE American ,of course, has one of these in their pocket already. As for you slackers , get one or move back to the Communist country you came from!

Anything Byrd.
Many Kershaws.
Victorinox Hunter.
Old Hickory.
Tramontina machetes.

Too many! Making...head...hurt...must disengage...

Must:
SAK Climber (gotta have a corkscrew!)

Useful:
SAK Classic
Gerber LST
Opinel
Mora

Cool:
K55K
CRKT M16

Lots of good suggestions. One more. That actually is cheap. And very good: Sanrenmu.

Because nothing makes me want to buy from a knife company like seeing it ripoff Spyderco, Benchmade, and CRK designs, while infringing on their patents and trademarks.

Svord Peasant
SAK Farmer
CS Kudo
CS Pocket Bushman
Opinel
Case Trapper
Rough Rider Linerlock Sodbuster
Mora
Kershaw JYD

The Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. It's almost indestructible, takes a good edge and the lock up is rock solid.

Most of my list has been mentioned already:

Opinel, any model with carbon steel.
Any SAK, Victorinox or Wenger.
Buck 119
Any Mora, but especially models with the wood handle and full-length tang.
AG Russell FeatherLite
Any original Old Timer from Imperial-Schrade.
Tremontina Machete.
