What did you rehang today?

This is a very fresh Collins axe, looks barely used. I just had to clean the head, give it a new wedge and sharpen it. 3lb head on a 34.5" handle.

mcrane i think i have that exact same hatchet you showed in your last post, i think its a slightly different pattern but the handle is pretty much a carbon copy

I've had a 3 1/2 lb. Hults Bruk axe for awhile now. The poll had taken a real beating somewhere, and as a result the eye was extra wide and misshapen. The only haft I could find when I restored it was a 26" club I got from Canadian Tire. It was the only haft that had an eye big and wide enough to fill the eye. I ended up having to put 2 round wedges in it to spread it out enough. This one won't be a keeper, and I have worried that in the wrong hands, a 3 1/2 head on such a short haft could be a dangerous shin splitter. Finally, I decided to rehaft it using a 36" Garant haft with a large eye. You can see from the photo of the wedge that I had to shim it in the front of the eye. I also discovered as I was sanding the helve that it had a hairline crack right near the front of the eye. I think it should be okay now. I didn't want such a long handle and was able to make it 33" by the end of the rehang.

This is a nice 3.5lb Collins Legitimus Connecticut on a new Lowe's handle. Sharpened and oiled, I like how it came out.

jb, great job as usual. I have a couple of Lowe's hafts sitting in the corner and both are short in the front for all the full size heads I've collected. I like what you have done to make up the deficiency, also the mix of hart and sapwood that Ames uses ad's another dimension to the project.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
Rick

Here's a Kelly Axe & Tool Co. DB that I just finished. Put this one on a House 30" octagonal handle. I really like the thin profile on this Kelly.

Picked this up with a batch of axe heads. Clearly the owner wanted everyone to know he was RFZ. He also marked the date (I assume) he got each axe. This one was 1976, so 50 years old. No name on it, so I don't know who might have made it. Maybe someone out there does? It is 1 1/4 lbs with a double bevel. Put it on a 12" handle. Probably make a good hunter's hatchet, or a kid's hatchet.

yes, they're good handles but it feels too angular to me, if i didnt put black walnut all over it i'd sand it, but im too lazy to re-fin it

Yeah, thought that's what you meant and those angular cuts would make it more vulnerable. Probably will use it for bucking rather than splitting and little of that since I used a 30" handle, a little short for 6'2". Used the shorter handle as I felt it was a better match to the bit which has a considerable amount of material removed from previous sharpinings...it's between 80 & 90 years old so I'll call it semi retired now.

Hey, great job on the polish of the double bit, that's exactly what I want to do to mine. What did you do on it? Buffing wheel? Steel wool and elbow grease?

Jim

Yeah Jim, it depends on what your starting with. If you enlarge the before photo you can see grinding marks where someone took it to a grinder, so in this case, I knew I'd have to do a lot of filing to re profile the edges and get rid of all the grinding damage. By the time I did that, I had bare metal way beyond the profiles. If the head is just rusty, I use a wire wheel on an angle grinder and follow with steel wool till I get the finish I'm looking for. I like to leave the patina whenever possible, but in this case it was gone after reprofiling, so I sanded the non edge part to about 220 grit. On the edges I start course and work my way to 1,500 grit to get that polish and it has a purpose...it resists rust much better than if you just stop with the file work. Also I don't like shiny so since I had to sand the body of this one, I used cold blue to kind of force some patina back in...not as good as the real thing, but beets shiny steel plus it will also resist rust better. Hope this is of some help to you. SW

Been super busy lately so I haven't been very active on here but I've still managed to get quite a few axes hung. First is a Sager Chemical cruiser on a 28" handle, second is a sweet 6lb Collins Legitimus Fire axe, not a Seagrave but in super good condition. Next is a TT Red Warrior again in super good condition, this one is peculiar though as it doesn't say Kelly Works on it like all the others I've seen. Next is a beast 4lb Kelly Perfect double bit, another in great condition. Yet another Sager Chemical cruiser on a 28" handle. And last but not least a Marshall Wells Zenith double bit, I think peeling pattern?

Finished this today. Head is 1lb 5oz on a 16" handle. This handle was an odd duck at 16" and fit the eye of a boys axe. It was thick too. So I did some heavy modifications and like the way it turned out.
