What did you rehang today?

Super nice job on that haft. And the grind on your Kelly Perfect looks great, too. That's a keeper.

Thanks mate! Eerie that you mention a Kelly Perfect though... the one I just posted was a Keen Kutter, but I did restore and hang a Kelly Perfect a month or two back on a 35" straight. The banana grind on the Kelly Perfect is more prominent, but the Keen Kutter's edge is actually thinner just because the bit itself has a slimmer profile.

Nice. What kind of wood is that?

Hickory from a blank I purchased from House Handles. I picked up seven of them, all about 1 ½” x 3 ¼” x 38". Paid extra for handpicked ones with good grain orientation. Very decent pricing in my opinion since I can't find a lumberyard here that stocks hickory... shipping was a bit high since the whole thing was ~40lbs:

I had never seen one that was this small it is a great little axe. And yes I did toast the handle myself and I have started soaking in some good stuff.

Nice ax, great clean embossing. I've never seen one that small, makes me wonder if it might just be ground way back in the bit. I've sold 4 black ravens on that good ol' auction site in the last 10-12months alone for tidy $500 or so profit. I can't tell you how many other flea market purchases those axes funded.

Joe, I am going to have to say that it started out this small it is marked 2-2 on the back side and the high carbon area is a little darker and appears to be to wide to have been ground down that much. I also have never seen a Black Raven cruiser but here it is, maybe someone out there knows if they made them but I am pretty sure it is factory since it is marked with such a small number. Here are a couple better pictures of the head showing the backside and the front and you can see the darker area.

Nicely done!

You must have done some rasping and sanding to get all those curves to turn out so great. Good lookin' haft!

This head has been waiting for a handle since the end of November. I've posted pictures of it on the board before; it's a 2lb Swedish head (thanks to killa_concept for recognizing the stamp), and it has a oval shaped euro-eye:

I had this nice handle that had a head come loose as three nails had been driven in the top. Cut the handle down 4 inches and mounted this on it:

Probably can't read the tape measure, but it's 30 inches long... I know, ridiculous right?

I can't bring myself to cut the nice swell off of the bottom, and this handle just is not ready to be tossed out.

Anyway, this rehang was not really that well done; I cut the kerf a bit off of centre, and the bit is not straight, though this seems to be because the poll itself is closer to a parallelogram than a rectangle.

The good news is it can chop really well with all of that handle, though it's definitely awkward for limbing.

Has anyone else used a handle this long for such a small head?

Also, thanks to all the advice from killa and square peg on sharpening with a file in the original thread for this head, and to everyone else who advised on handling and chopping and etc. etc.... it's been frustrating at times over these few months with the broken handles, the heads coming loose, trying to find places to get handles, thinning handles, heads still coming loose, new handles breaking, and so on and so forth... but I've learned a lot (including how much more there is to learn) and I have 2 nice boys axes, one nice hatchet, and this weird thing, whatever it is.
