What did you rehang today?

First Post, first hang.
I picked up this 4lb Mann Dayton pattern head for $12. Looks to me pretty much unused. Black paint over the handle end, was hung with an aluminum wedge. Judging by the tool marks on the poll and the wonky grind, I'm guessing it's one of their lower end models, maybe from the 50s or 60s:

Hung it on a True Temper from Lowes, good grain orientation, no runout. I thinned the shoulders a bit, and took off the varnish, and am treating it with BLO. I noticed a bit of a bend in it after I hung it, oh well:

The edge could use a bit more time with the file and stone, pretty sure this thing had never been sharpened. But it's functional and now ready to do some work:

Can't see my pics, huh. Weird, I can see them in the post on both my computer and phone. I've been able to link directly from Google photos on other forums. I'll have to check it out when I get home.

re-hung my FSS plumb california. the handle it was on was easily the worst one i'v ever bought.

this is a lowes handle i'v octagonalized. not a huge fan of lowes handles for west coast heads, since they typically have a large eye and these handles have a small tongue.

the head went clear down to the shoulders and stopped on the corners. right now, as it sits, it is the best fit possible on this handle.

this is my first octagon handle, lets see how goes

I almost made the Lowes handle I used for my True Temper FSS octagonal, and also wished the toung was a bit larger.. looks great! Now I’m kinda wishing I went that route with my handle.

I like the heavy poll on that Mann.

Finally hung this Walters. I plan to do a WIP thread once I get it all sorted out.

This is a light, 2.6 pound, full size on a full length 36" knob end haft I carved out of a stave sent to me by forum member Quinton. I'm lovin' this thing!!! It's pretty now but it will be relegated to trail work and will get ugly soon. That's what it's designed for.

Not into the idea of making any old tool look new, but I gotta say I don't hate the way this thing looks.
You did a good job, and I'm sure it'll serve well.

Thanks. The paint patterns and colors are vintage Walters on both the head and the haft. I'm generally not a paint guy but I decided to do something different.

Your work came out absolutely fabulous.
Keeping to the original paint colors and scheme really compliments the awesome handle you carved.
I would run to be first to use that axe...of course at 5'6" it's Almost as long as i am tall lol!

Super nice man - swell and knob look great and has an overall vintage look.

Far out man, and right on Square-Peg, that's awesome, dude. You just earned 1/2 century's worth of colloquial compliments! Old Morley's gonna come to visit with you for sure now.

Maybe there are a bare HANDFUL of people that could make that handle look nicer, but I think that functionally it is probably as good as it gets. It has to be in the top %95 of all handles ever made. I hesitate to ask how many hours you put into shaping it. The swell is the greatest, I have a handful of top notch unused vinatge replacement handles with the exact same shape at the swell. I believe that they are left that way for fitting, and then are meant to be cut off at the ridge to form the fawn's foot when hanging is complete.
