What did you rehang today?

This is an S&N with no more makers mark. It was faint to begin with and it has the weight stamp so i cleaned it up before hanging it. Stamped #3-1/2 but weighs #3-6.7oz.
A few of the process.

You'd think I'd stop buying em since i now have 4 of the same pattern!
Very nice!

I like the wedge curls there.

I don't know it it's the right way but I try for this on my wedges. The ones that start like this seem to hold well. I like to knock, follow with my knife, knock, and repeat.

I'm not sure what you mean? You cut the curls off before driving it further??

Affirmative. First, off the front and back of the eye - gives you a little more control with filling those pesky spaces that sometimes get left open. For example, the tight angle at the front of the eye, or even filling that and the space that might be there if the handle's tongue doesn't completely reach the full length of the eye. Think of a "cartoon arrow" needing to be filled at the end of the eye:

Or when you rehang an old handle and you maybe have lost just a touch off one side of the tongue - not perfect, but not enough to justify not using it again.

Hammers with an hourglass shape sometimes are left with some space at either end of the tongue just because you had to take the tongue down enough to even to get it through the narrow portion of the eye.

The curls at the sides of the wedge, the same approach. I've been able to make small, final adjustments, side to side, to line up bits to the handle doing that. (Head was punched a little off-center, otherwise great old handle has twisted a touch, etc.). This all works more when your wedge is made from softer wood of course. Hardwood wedges maybe don't have this option to the same degree.

Nothing wrong with the perfect wedge that doesn't curl at all.
Sometimes I treat the wedge with similar care that I put into getting the shoulder to "just slip into the eye" without leaving a ledge where it enters the axe.

But yes, I try to trim them as I go.

Well I've gone and hung another one.. this time i made the handle though. Just finished it! Lots o pics on this one. Sorry if i end up hogging the whole d@$n page! I spent forever(like over two hours) last night filing the crap outta that new rockaway. Still have to hone it. This time i left a nice shoulder. I think it looks nice. Looks older to me at least.

I couldn't find fault with that handle if I wanted to. But if you made me (gun to my head), I feel like that axe would not suffer from some wood stain. Cherry? ;)

Great work.

I like what you are doing Josh. Do you like the rise in grip behind the poll?

I don’t see handles like that
Here at least.

Thank you! I don't know if i can bring myself to stain it. At least not from a can. Perhaps i can make a stain of sorts? I think i heard someone mention that coffee grounds would darken a handle. I would like it to be a nice dark color. I'll put some thought to it and, literally, keep ya posted... lol.

I do like it! I hang them both ways. With a pronounced shoulder sometimes and totally without others. In a felling axe i prefer the shoulder. It gives me a nice positive stop before swinging again. Plus, to me, it looks nice. I guess I'm weird as it seems that most guys prefer no shoulder at all. Thanks for the kind words! It's pretty darn gratifying! I honed it up to razor sharp. A convex razor... i really put a lot of time into this one.

Is that ash? All of my ash handles have darkened nicely after oiling, time and use. If you want it really dark maybe their is a way to add a tint to whatever you use for oil.

Have you tried pine tar? It will darken it a little even though it isn't a stain.
BTW your work is really nice.

Yes white ash. I've had the same outcome as you after oiling my other ash handles. After jb mentioned though it got me thinking that it would be nice to have a nice rich dark brown for this one. I just realized i forgot to fire hardens the eye before i hung it! Damnit i really meant to do that!

This is an E&S 3lb Connie (or their closest version) rehung on the handle I got it with, cleaned, oiled and tightened. The kerf is what it is, but it is tight.

How long is the handle on this one? I would love to try out a 3lb head on a 30” or so handle, in my mind it would be just about perfect.

Exceptionally well done!

Is that hickory of ash?

I love what you did with the swell - sort of a knob end. And good grip and a little extra for driving the haft into the head.
