What did you rehang today?

Gave this FE rafter some love today. Not much abuse, but lots of weather, has given it some pretty good character.

Tennesee Hickory needed thinned some, as usual. Angle grinder with a 36 grit flap does it fast. Couple minutes of hand sanding with 100 grit after that and its good enough for me.

Great job on the head and handle!! I'll have to try the flap disk method on those tennessee handles. I have one waiting for me and I haven't had the motivation to start it because its so much work with my 4 in hand which is what I do almost all my shaping with. That's a lot of rasping.
Also, I have the 5lb version of your Flint Edge rafting head. Recentlyl hung it on a 28" straight house handle. Very similar.

Wish I could say that I rehung this no-name 3 1/2 pounder today...

but that would require that I make one of those wooden wedgie-things and pound it in the appropriate end of the axe! I did manage to get the old wedge pulled and the mushrooming cleaned up before I lost interest. What will I have if I ever get it done? A cast axe with no credentials, but I figure it would make a fine modern-day faller's axe, easy to pack, good for occasional chopping, but mostly for driving wedges. It will never be a Flint Edge! Oh, well... T-A
BTW, nice work on both your axes!

A cast axe with no credentials

Why "cast",T.-A.?

Because of that ridge you ground, back of the poll?
I doubt Very much that was from casting,it's just a closed-die forging not ground off:)
(in order to fill the die completely some excess is required, and some squeezes out from between the halves of the die).
If you look at some newer,cruder/more carelessly made/cheaper tools you'll see that often.
Sledges, mauls, splitting wedges...Things chunky and where the outside is not critical are only ground on business ends/surfaces.Very common.
In a casting that ridge from parting line is called "flash",but in die-forging the name of it i know not...to my shame and chagrin...:(

I finally acquired an Emerson Stevens connie! Hung it on a 30" white ash helve I made awhile ago.

It weighs just under 3-1/2lb after filing. Needed a little reprofiling but not too much. It's made in '43. Super happy to finally have one! Can't wait to put er to work!

Holy cow, Great find! Love that ash handle! It has some great curves and a perfect swell! That grind is phenomenal! Congrats on your find!

Another TT Flint Edge, I really love these heads as they are available in my area somewhat often.
Hung on a beautiful day, I just really need to sharpen it. It was hard going at times. Those eye ridges are evil!

I got really lucky on the fit, only three attempts and the wedge was down.

It's still a bit oily. This has BLO now, but it got a new watco finish later in the afternoon.

It has a baby curl and just enough gap to not care about. My time matters more than perfection on a user.

I should have been mowing, the yard takes an hour pushing it. I refuse to buy a rider.
However, this was so much more fun!

I don't think this head has seen very much use.

BONUS: I got the Plumb somewhat finished. It wanted to give a sneak peek.

Nice head, nicely hung, beautiful curves, swell and grain. I can almost feel it in my hands, and it feels great! Well done! T-A
That looks like it will be a great chopper!

Thank you guys!
I traded a pretty minty E&S wedge pattern for it. Mine was in better condition but from what I've seen there are 5 wedges to every 1 connie from E&S. I actually made that helve for the wedge but I removed it for the trade. I made another helve for this axe but I messed up during hanging and hung a different axe on that one. My next post I'll feature that one.
I couldn't be happier with this axe/helve combo! Guys it feels so good to handle this! Either falling or overhand chop it's going to be excellent. I appreciate the kind words about it.
Hope you all are doing great during this troubling time. :D

Besides the nice work you did, both those heads look very fresh, great heads.

Pretty flowers too, shame the grass isn't better kept.

;)

Figured I'd share my other recent hang. I made this haft for that E&S connie in my last post.

It's a long story but I ended up chasing a gap at the back of the eye all the way down near the shoulder. It was getting dark, I was tired and really trying to get it done. Ended up with the axe way too closed in hang and therefore the front of the tongue was sanded very, very thin. So thin I thought I had ruined the haft I spent so much time and care making.
But I was able to hang a pre-1930 Kelly Works Champion on it! Thank goodness!
So it's hung a fair bit more closed than I really like but I'm happy to have been able to salvage the helve. Anyway here it is!

So anyhow I'm happy with how it looks at least. Being so closed it can have its uses. Mainly for me underhand chop though it is a tad short for me for that purpose. In the end I was just happy to be able to use the haft.
Thanks for checking it out and sorry for the photo bomb!

Are you sure you are allowed to use internet?
You must have some Amish blood running in your veins (Killinger's guy should be afraid of your CRAFTSMANSHIP).
Those curves and knob are spectacular.
That close hang looks like one of those JB used to find in his neck of the woods.

Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words! I just bought two Killinger helves and they are frigging awesome! My first time buying helves sight unseen and I was nervous. But one haft is the definition of perfection and the other is close behind it! I put a lot of time into it man so I appreciate you saying that! :)
It's a beautifully shaped handle, glad you got to use it!

I'd worry about that run out in the belly a little, but not enough to stop me from using it.

Worst case you have a great time for a little while....

Wait, are we still talking about axes :D
And thank you! Honestly for use I don't care for that much curve. It was meant to be a looker that could be used if I wish.
It's not runout it's just the colors mixing from sapwood to heartwood. She's almost perfectly straight grained! It's weird though in this photo the light makes it look bent a little and it isn't. About 70% of the grain is continuous.

What I saw was in your last picture, pretty obvious Bullseye in that belly.
The top down pic you just showed looks great though.
I was confused there for a minute! :confused:The grain is hard to track sometimes. I don't know if you've found that. But it does wave a bit on its way down the haft. After some counting and eyeballing there is a little more runout than I thought. It's about half. About 55%-60% is continuous.
Maybe it's because I'm tired but it took me awhile to figure that out. Haha. I'm gonna hit the sack before I write something stupid!. Thanks again man. :D:thumbsup:
