What did you rehang today?

Quinton, that is a great looking piece of work! Thanks for the in progress pictures by the way.

Thanks, Agent_H!
If I had a better connection speed I would have posted more pictures. I live up a holler, between mountains, deep in the woods, here in Ky. bah humbug!:D

Great looking axe. I like the proportion and shape of the handle with the head.

Bob

Thanks, Bob!
My intentions were to make a curvy "H" grained handle, but my current stash of staves don't have enough sapwood to orientate a curvy handle in that direction. I'll cut a couple more trees for staves in a few weeks, and hopefully I'll find one with thick sapwood..

Rehung this WV hatchet with its original haft the other day. Got this out of grandpa's tool she'd a while back when he moved. Good edge, original haft with round metal wedge. Used some walnut for a new wedge, only set down maybe 1/4".

Impressive work there Quinton! You have mastered making handles from a stave.

Agreed. The fawnsfoot is stellar too! How did you do most of the shaping?
Again, thanks..
I do the rough shaping with a hewing hatchet. Then, a farrier's rasp, and a paint scraper are pretty much used to completion. The scraper is handy for removing rasp marks, and working under the fawnsfoot. A good sharp farrier's rasp will remove wood at a fast rate, and the length and width of the rasp used as a sighting plane help keep facets perfectly straight. All of the handles I've ever made start as octagons. Being able to sight down the facets allows me to keep the handle perfect as I work. If the handle is intended to be oval I just gently rasp the angles off of the octagon when the shaping is done.

I just did a couple small things. The hammer is a 2lb Warwood head, and as it was kind of stubby I thought it would be great on a really short handle. I re-purposed a hammer handle with a cracked top by cutting it short and reshaping it. The handle is now 9.5" long. The hatchet is an all original TT Flint Edge that I just cleaned up and re-oiled.
