What did you rehang today?

Very nice! I have done several of those and due to the taper I find the metal wedge is much more of a necessity than on axes and hatchets.

That seems like a good use for a metal wedge.

Those hammers have pretty short eyes without a whole lot of material/room to spread out at the top. Nice work on the handle, bet your coworker was pleased to see it set up again.

It looked pretty dumb before I pounded that metal wedge in, which filled it nicely. I placed it off center so he'd have room to put another in if he needs to someday.

I've got an old Woodings Verona maul and a Vaughan-made Craftsman to hang next. Hope to get one done this weekend.

Thanks for the comments

Recieved an absolutely beautiful early Urafors head in the mail today, hacked out a 22 3/4" birch handle for it after work. Still need to scrape the handle to smooth it out.

Thanks guys! Undecided if I want to flame the handle, or just oil it. I need to finish scraping it with the glass (I much prefer it to sand paper) so I've got time to decide.

I've never flamed a handle. Is there a way to do it to make it look "even" or is "uneven" part of the charm?

Being consistent with the torch is key to an even color, when I do it I usually do it darker then I want and then use find sand paper to lighten it up. I always lather the handle in a non combustible oil to prevent charring.

I think I'm going to let this one age naturally.

I hung a couple this weekend, only intended to hang the Norlund for a client. But, as I worked the stave down I saw that a little knot was going to persist. So I grabbed a new stave to make the haft for the clients Norlund and used the stave with the knot for a Plumb I had laying around. The third is a Diamond Edge that I hung on a Link boys handle last fall. The Diamond Edge name is fitting!

Very cool Quinton. Your handle work is great. I like your octagonalized handle you put together there.

All three are beautiful tools.

Man Quinton you are a master handle maker. Considering some of the work you have done building stairs and library rooms in high end home I guess making a handle like these is not much of a challenge. I've been out of town the past two weekends and worked the weekend before so I'll get back on my stave this weekend.

Thanks, Rob! I know how no free time go's..:(

quinton those handles are exquisite! You have a good eye for creating pleasant lines and curves and the fact that these are literally 'stick-built' is really impressive. They sure don't (and never did) teach any of that stuff in trade school.
