what is the sharpest FACTORY edge you've seen?

Second would be the Ontario RAT 1. Wicked sharp, perfect grinds, right out of the box.

Really? Mine wasn't all that impressive so I had to sharpen it at least to shaving sharp. My Spyderco Endura 4 came 'shaving sharp' - I wish every knife did.

I bought a KA-BAR Hobo - it came blunt. I sharpened it for a while and it felt much better, but wouldn't shave. I tested it on a tomato for lunch - it struggled to cut that. I sharpened some more and eventually got it sharp enough to shave so I tested it on another tomato at dinner time - it cut so much better. I have come to believe that testing a knife for shaving ability is not a bad idea - sharp enough to shave = acceptable, not sharp enough to shave = unacceptable. Even my SAK can shave with either blade, the same on my LM Wave - if it wont do it with the factory edge then get sharpening!

In my experience, every knife made by Spyderco comes out of the box razor sharp; out of my Spydercos, the Chokwe seems the sharpest...

Sharpest from the factory was my Kershaw Leek. Dullest was my Spyderco D2 Para. My other knives were all somewhere in the middle of these two.

Serrated: Spyderco Police

Plain: Kershaw Leek

Fixed: Cold Steel LTC Kukri

But nothing cuts through solid steel doors like my Light Saber :D

My Ka-Bar Dozier folder was the sharpest out of the box I have ever seen. This Dozier knife came absolutely scalpel sharp with AUS-8.

I just got my Kershaw stonewashed Avalanche and it is the sickest sharp I've experienced. More sharp than my Cyclone, Tenacious, Endura, BM Nagara, or Griptilians. The only knife that oddly enough even can close is my cheapo Gerber Vallotton. It is shite steel but been my steady user for over a year and stays nearly as sharp.

OK- whats with the black DLC on the damascus leek, and what are the 4 small notches top blade near the handle? Older model or modified? I've been thinking of taking the scales off my G10 leek, replace with wood or horn, and put the damascus blade in it. I do like the black handle though.

For folders I've gotta say my Spyderco Centofante 4's, both of them hair popping sharp out of the box. For fixed blade it was a Lone Wolf semi-skinner. It was ridiculously scary sharp.

For me it's probably a tie between the CS Black Rock Hunter and the KaBar Large Dozier Folder.
Funny enough my Fallkniven P folder was not very sharp to begin with. It is now, but it took some time. First time I sharpened GPS.

Probably my Leeks. Used to work at this place where I'd cut thru shrink wrapped rolls of plastic on deliveries and they would cut straight down thru it with no pressure. Just with the weight of the knife.

Used to show folks how I'd barely hold it with it swiveling between my fingers and it cut right down thru it.

My Delica4 full-serrated is wicked sharp too.

My Buck Mayo Waimea came hair popping sharp out of the box.
Used it a lot and it still shaves, I love Bos heat treated S30V
