What Knife Makes You Feel Safe?

Wow, this thread really boomed :D I leave you guys here for 4 hours and then ya'll throw 40+ posts at me

Ok, i'd remain in bed and let Bob answer the door

I keep a shoulder pouch next to the bed in case I ever have to investigate the house in my "jammies". In it is clipped a Syderco Endura 4 with Spydie Edge. I'd only grab the knife as a last resort, but that is what I'd have at hand for the scenario posted. Something like this has only happened to me twice, once was a false alarm, the second was my newspaper man smashing into the telephone pole outside my house @ 4a.m., and tearing out my electric entry. For both of those "bumps", I had a pistol in hand. The knife is backup.:D

In both instances, I also learned the value of having a good, bright flashlight at the ready. Very strange feeling for someone to be startled out of bed, by something, but not really knowing what that something was. The lights surging, and bulbs blowing while you try to get your bearings. He claimed a deer ran out in front of him. I think he was just a lousy driver, and tired.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd answer the door at 2 a.m., not without talking through the door. It's probably what Blagojevich should have done the morning the feds visited him. "Ummm...he's not here right now...." Anyway, if I had to open the door at 2 a.m. with a knife, I really would have to pick the Cold Steel War Head I just got. It's huge, light, well balanced, doubled-edged, sharp as hell and black. The problem with large, heavy knives is that they build up momentum when you move them and are difficult to get back on target. Not so with this knife. So let me put it this way, I'd hate to knock on a door at 2 a.m. and have some guy answer it with a War Head in his hands.

Wish I had a knife I'd go to but in reality, I'd reach for my gun.

I keep some stale twinkies in the kitchen cabinet. They are deadly within 10 ft. and still legal to possess in California. :D

CS Ti-Lite. My house alarm went off a few months ago at 3am, and I instantly grabbed it.

Well, my earlier answer was kind of jokingly made and I feel kind of bad that I didn't answer exactly honestly. I do own a CS bowie machete.....but I don't carry it. If I wanted to lop off arms, I'd go and dig through my knife collection and get it.......but we don't always have time to do that. So...to be honest:

O.k., it's almost 2 a.m. here and I'm setting here and look down at my desk and see that I have a knife here with me. It's an Ontario Marine combat with the old style leather handle.

I suppose that's what I'd answer the door with if somebody knocked right now.

That's my honest answer. I like carrying the marine combat when I'm out in the woods, and I certainly have it laying right here, so that's probably in all honesty the one that makes me feel safe right now.

Looks like we're in the same time zone :D I too am waiting for that knock on the door......with my spyderco military at my side as I type. My "office" is in my little den not more than 4' from the door

When not in a foreign country I would get my .38

if not, my Outcast!

I do want to buy some swords in the future. So I would want something along the lines of a Jian or cutlass.

though no knives make me feel safe my mad dog SEAL ATAK2 comes the closest, followed by my bud nealy 5" M2 pesh kebz and my '71 model gerber mark 11.

If I were back at my folks I'd have a number of swords at my disposal, including a couple of spears. In that case I might go for my katar. :D

However at my current location I don't have space for all of my big pretty pointies. :(

I usually don't carry a knife with me except for when I am on my survival trips. I feel damn safe with my usual suspects (Fehrmans, Fällknivens and Extrema Ratios) but nothing beats my bokken (wooden kendo sword) in my car trunk. Busse FBM would also do the trick I guess, but I am still saving to fetch one one day.

I forgot to mention I have a three piece, full exposed tang diaso(sp?) set,but it's all the way in my livingroom,so it most likely wouldn't be the first thing I grab.

One of my knives would be my second choice, but if I had to grab one of them to answer the door it would be either my Military or my Paramilitary because of their size and grippiness.
